Excerpt from Business-a Profession It is true that at the present time the lawyer does not hold that position With the people which he held fifty years ago; but the reason is in my opinion not lack of opportunity. It is because, instead of holding a position of independence between the wealthy and the people, prepared to curb the excesses of either, the able lawyers have to a great extent allowed them selves to become an adjunct of the great corporations, and have neglected their obligation to use their powers for the protection of the people. If we are to solve the important economic, social and industrial ques tions Which have become political questions also, it seems to me clear that the attitude of the lawyer in this respect must be materially changed. The great opportunity of the American Bar is and will be to stand again as it did in the past, ready to protect also the interests of the people. Of this work in the people's service, his story is a unique example. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Business Problems, of a Profession This little book is the outgrowth of numerous short articles written for dental journals and addresses delivered before societies. If it proves of assistance to brother practitioners in solving some of their business problems, its purpose will be served. Twenty years of varied experiences in the practice of dentistry together with extensive acquaintance among the practitioners of our chosen profession, have afforded the writer unusual opportunities for observing the conditions that prevail. He is convinced that the reason that some have not succeeded as they anticipated, has not been due to their lack of professional ability so much as to their lack of business ability and a knowledge of the business principles that are involved in all transactions. It is the object of this book to supply information on this subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from An Approach to Business Problems So with many business proverbs and maxims. One frequently hears, for example, that Goods well bought are half sold. Yet this is misleading unless good buy ing comprehends a knowledge of all the complex con ditions which govern the market. Cheapness alone is not a final test of good buying, for the loss from over stocking in order to secure price concessions may more than counterbalance a price advantage. Applying the proverb in a mere mechanical way, therefore, might bring loss, if not disaster. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Business Education and Accountancy It has long been recognized that the old-time treatise on Political Economy have little in common with the experience of business men. An assignable reason for this is that these works were not, and from their very nature and inception could not pretend to be, treatises on subjects of immediate business interest. They fall more properly within the field of Politics - that department of learning which attempts to inquire into questions of public welfare. The "political" economist has not attempted to collect and to classify the data of business; his interest has been in "political" economic questions. The problems of Political Economy are protection, free-trade, currency and banking reform, conflicts of capital and labor, etc. - subjects of public or of broadly social bearing; its point of departure has been one of national or social expediency; its purpose is to win converts to a political or social creed. The method of Political Economy, therefore, has been partisan - its literary and rhetorical form in the nature of special pleading directed towards legal and social reform. Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world?
