Complex three dimensional flow fields are seen to consist of identifiable, morphologically invariant, mildly interacting, flow structures or modules. Outputs of such flow fields such as wind loads, heat and mass transfer, flow quality, mixing, and pressure losses can be rationally established and with a knowledge of the modular structure. The paper discusses the modular approach for the case of flows around three-dimensional obstacles in boundary layers and for the case of tailoring free-stream flow and turbulence by flow inserts such as screens, perforated plates, honeycombs and foam slabs. (Author Modified Abstract).

These two volumes contain the proceedings of the workshop on the Institute for Computer Instability and Transition, sponsored by Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE) and the Langley Research Center (LaRC), during May 15 to June 9, 1989. The work shop coincided with the initiation of a new, focused research pro gram on instability and transition at LaRC. The objectives of the workshop were to (i) expose the academic community to current technologically important issues of instability and transition in shear flows over the entire speed range, (ii) acquaint the academic com munity with the unique combination of theoretical, computational and experimental capabilities at LaRC and foster interaction with these facilities, (iii) review current state-of-the-art and propose fu ture directions for instability and transition research, (iv) accelerate progress in elucidating basic understanding of transition phenomena and in transferring this knowledge into improved design methodolo gies through improved transition modeling, and (v) establish mech anisms for continued interaction. The objectives (i) to (iii) were of course immediately met. It is still premature to assess whether ob jectives (iv) and (v) are achieved. The workshop program consisted of tutorials, research presenta tions, panel discussions, experimental and computational demonstra tions, and collaborative projects.

Wind Engineering is a compendium of papers from the Fifth International Conference on Wind Engineering held in Colorado, USA, on July 8-14, 1979. Papers discuss the social and economic impact of wind storms, particularly the need for improvement in decision making in building construction, development of design and construction criteria for low-income housing. Other papers describe snow-management and microzonation studies to quantify, with better precision, the probabilities used in decision models. Some papers describe localized wind environments and wind loading (fluctuating internal, fluctuating external). Other papers analyze the dynamic response of tall buildings and towers, such as in crosswinds, wind direction, alongwind, and wind action with interference effects from similar surrounding buildings. Experiments show that by properly modeling a structure in a boundary layer wind tunnel, the investigator can obtain results which are dynamically fully comparable to a full scale situation. Another paper discusses the recommendations of the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork in calculating the wind effects on buildings and structures. The compendium can be appreciated by environmentalist, civil engineers, structural engineers, architects, physicists, students and professors of meteorology.

The Structure Of Three Dimensional Separated Flows In Obstacle Boundary Layer Interactions written by Raymond Sedney and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1975 with Boundary layer categories.

The subject is investigated with flow visualization techniques; the turbulent boundary layer on the wall of a continuous supersonic wind tunnel is used. Sizeable separated flow regions can be studied since the wall width is 38cm and the boundary layer is typically 2.5cm thick. The large scale of the experiment is required to resolve the fine details of the flow structure. The flow visualization techniques are discussed. The structure of the separated flow upstream of the obstacle is seen to change with relatively small changes in Reynolds number R; the number of vortices varies from 6 to 4 to 2 as R changes. Data are presented for large and small protuberances, but the latter are emphasized.

These Proceedings contain the papers and oral discussions presented at the Symposium on AERODYNAMIC DRAG MECHANISMS of Bluff Bodies and Road Vehides held at the General Motors Research Laboratories in Warren, Michigan, on September 27 and 28, 1976. This international, invitational Symposium was the twentieth in an annual series, each one having been in a different technical discipline. The Symposia provide a forum for areas of science and technology that are of timely interest to the Research Laboratories as weIl as the technical community at large, and in which personnel of the Laboratories are actively involved. The Symposia furnish an opportunity for the exchange of ideas and current knowledge between participating research specialists from educational, industrial arid governmental institutions and serve to stimulate future research activity. The present world-wide energy situation makes it highly desirable to reduce the force required to move road vehicles through the atmosphere. A significant amount of the total energy consumed for transportation is expended in overcoming the aerodynamic resistance to motion of these vehicles. Reductions in this aerodynamic drag can therefore have a large impact on ground transportation energy requirements. Although aerodynamic development work on road vehides has been performed for many years, it has not been widely reported or accompanied by much basic research.
