The aim of The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola is to help people fill their everyday lives with the Christian faith. Created in the 16th century (1522–1524), this book remains a topical guide on how to improve our spiritual growth. The book is split in four thematic chapters, called "weeks", entitled "God's Mercy, My Sin," "God's call to me in Christ," "Sharing in the Cross of Christ,""The Resurrection". Each week has a program of meditations, prayers, considerations, and contemplative practices. They are all aimed to help people improve their religious intentions in practice, so that every life decision is based on the faith and devotion to the Christ. The book's popularity has grown considerable since 1980's and also spread to other Christian denominations. Ignatius of Loyola (1491–1556) was a Spanish Catholic priest and theologian, co-founder of the Society of Jesus (The Jesuits). He was also selected as the first Superior General of the Society of Jesus, at Paris, in 1541.He was a spiritual director of Jesuits and developed his method of devotion and recommendation for his brotherhood in Spiritual Exercises. After his death, Ignatius was beatified and received a title of a saint in 1622. Ignatius is a patron saint of soldiers.

Its effects are often life changing. But what exactly is it, and why do so many people embrace it? The most influential spiritual movement of the modern age is Ignatian spirituality, an approach to the spiritual life based on the insights of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Ignatian spirituality teaches an active attentiveness to God joined with a prompt responsiveness to God, who is ever active in people’s lives. In What Is Ignatian Spirituality?,David L. Fleming, SJ, provides an authoritative yet highly accessible summary of the key elements of Ignatian spirituality, among which are contemplative prayer, discernment, and dynamic involvement in service and mission. In twenty concise chapters, Fr. Fleming explains how this centuries-old method of disciplined reflection on God’s work in the world can deepen our spiritual lives today and guide all the decisions we make. An approach to the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius As more and more people begin to reclaim their spiritual heritage, longoverlooked traditions resurface, offering seekers new ways to rekindle their spiritual selves. The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola is such a tradition, and its recovery in the church has sparked the interest of many believers—religious and laypeople alike. In light of this resurgence, Fr. William A. Barry, a director of the Spiritual Exercises for more than thirty years, offers Letting God Come Close, a guide that shows spiritual directors how to effectively and creatively help individuals meet the living God through the Exercises. Using clear, down-to-earth examples from his own experience, Fr. Barry hopes to instill in the director the trust, confidence, and skills needed to help retreatants approach God. “Spiritual directors will find a gold mine here of help in understanding and giving the Exercises.” —George Aschenbrenner, S.J., director, Jesuit Center for Spiritual Growth “For over thirty years Barry has listened attentively for the ways God deals directly with God’s people through the Spiritual Exercises. God’s voice comes through and Barry helps directors pay attention.” —George R. Murphy, S.J., adjunct lecturer in spirituality at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley

She explores the story and prayer tradition of Ignatius of Loyola, together with the contribution of the seventeenth-century Yorkshire woman, Mary Ward. A guide for Lent and the rest of the year, The Way of Ignatius helps us to pray with the Scriptures in an imaginative way. To aid reflection and discussion, there are questions at the end of each chapter. ‘In this wonderful book, Gemma Simmonds explores the method of prayer developed by St Ignatius in a way that makes this profound approach to prayer accessible . . . I highly recommend this book.’ Ian Mobsby, Anglican priest, writer, speaker and Prior, Wellspring New Monastic Community, Peckham, London ‘If you are looking for insightful and encouraging spiritual reading, you have found your book! . . . These Spiritual Exercises were written by Ignatius of Loyola, a theologian, priest and founder of the Society of Jesus, in the sixteenth century. They are Catholic prayers, reflections, meditations, mental exercises and directions designed to be read and carried out over a 28 to 30 day time period. These exercises are for Catholics and non-Catholics alike and grew out of Ignatius' own desire to seek God's will and to follow Christ no matter what the cost. Ignatius' intent was that the exercises would help others to discern God's will and to set the world on fire for Christ!
