In early nineteenth-century Russia, members of jocular literary societies gathered to recite works written in the lightest of genres: the friendly verse epistle, the burlesque, the epigram, the comic narrative poem, the prose parody. In a period marked by the Decembrist Uprising and heightened state scrutiny into private life, these activities were hardly considered frivolous; such works and the domestic, insular spaces within which they were created could be seen by the Russian state as rebellious, at times even treasonous. Joe Peschio offers the first comprehensive history of a set of associated behaviors known in Russian as “shalosti,” a word which at the time could refer to provocative behaviors like practical joking, insubordination, ritual humiliation, or vandalism, among other things, but also to literary manifestations of these behaviors such as the use of obscenities in poems, impenetrably obscure allusions, and all manner of literary inside jokes. One of the period’s most fashionable literary and social poses became this complex of behaviors taken together. Peschio explains the importance of literary shalosti as a form of challenge to the legitimacy of existing literary institutions and sometimes the Russian regime itself. Working with a wide variety of primary texts—from verse epistles to denunciations, etiquette manuals, and previously unknown archival materials—Peschio argues that the formal innovations fueled by such “prankish” types of literary behavior posed a greater threat to the watchful Russian government and the literary institutions it fostered than did ordinary civic verse or overtly polemical prose.

Intimacy is a complex and heterogeneous concept that has generated a variety of definitions, theories, and philosophies over the years. Al though there is much disagreement about the essential meaning of the term, there seems to be a consensus that intimacy, whatever it may be, is of central importance in human relationships, and specifically, in the theory and practice of psychotherapy. One approach to intimacy focuses on an intrapsychic conception. Intimacy occurs when an individual achieves full self-knowledge, and is fully in touch with his or her feelings and wishes. From this viewpoint, an intimate act occurs when a person is willing to share these feelings and wishes with another, so that self-disclosure becomes an important index of intimacy. This definition also implies that intimacy need not be reciprocal, so that a therapeutic relationship can achieve a good deal of intimacy without the therapist engaging in self-disclosure. An alternate approach to intimacy stresses the interpersonal nature of the concept. Intimacy is seen as the product of an interaction, and can only occur between people. Each one is able to touch something meaningful in the other, whether at a conscious, behavioral level or an unconscious and inferential level. Therapists seeking intimacy in these terms would probably be a good deal more active, and consider it more important to reveal something of the substance of their own persons, if not the facts of their lives.

Port Dalhousie started out as a farming and fishing settlement at the mouth of Twelve Mile Creek at what would become the northern terminus of the First Welland Canal. Throughout the 19th century, it prospered and grew into a village and then a town, but fell into a gradual decline due to: the opening of the Fourth Welland Canal in Port Weller three miles to the east in 1932; the end of passenger ship service in 1950; and the closing of the popular Lakeside Park in 1971. In 1961 it was incorporated into the City of St. Catharines and, in 1974, woke up to a resurgence of pride in a community that discovered its incredible history. Many of those residents who had lived through the earliest of these times, were still alive when the interviews herein were first being recorded. Though the forty-some interviews contained within add personal colour, humour and passion to the story that is Port Dalhousie, the historical account would not be complete without a narrative that defines the eras that this settlement, village and town passed through on the way to becoming what it is today. This history begins at the close of the 18th century and carries on to the early 1960s when it ceased being a town and became a suburb of the City of St. Catharines. The many who remember the days prior to amalgamation, and even many newcomers, identify with living in Port Dalhousie; or as the old-timers would say “Pordaloozie”
