quantified in generic dimensions, additionally an experimental method is required that provides for reproducible and valid empirical data. Here in particular caveats and chances when using virtual reality (VR) technology for architectural simulation are discussed. The following chapter reviews the current state of theories and research on affective responses to architecture. Subsequently, four empirical studies are presented that test the previously conceptualized methodological framework and explore emotional influences of various basic architectural design aspects. Three alternative approaches for the quantitative description of architecture are developed, either based on image processing, lists of architectural elements, or Space Syntax methods. Finally, the issue of potential interactions between different design aspects is discussed and empirically tested, leading to a plausible framework model for the integration of individual factors. Taken together, a viable approach to the experience of architectural space is outlined promising novel insights into the emotional meaning of architecture.

Corporeality: Emergent consciousness within its spatial dimensions develops our understanding of what we can experience through our bodies in relation to the space around us. Rather than considering architecture as being about manifestation and mediation of fixed meanings, the book focuses instead on architectural space as a field that envelopes us incessantly, intimately, and affectively. We are in immediate contact with that space, and the way we relate to it determines how we are able to grasp the realities of the social and material worlds around us. This enquiry considers architectural space and its impact on and relation to us from a range of disciplines and perspectives, leading from space to sense and to sensibility. The theatre becomes a central point of reference on this journey, allowing us to understand how space “works” by linking concrete spatial conditions to corresponding “forms of experience”. It allows showing how the ways we feel, think, and act emerge from within the rich texture of the pre-conscious and non-contemplative. That texture is induced and nourished by our bodily encounters with space. Offering a view of how immediate experience is generated in the body, this book enhances empirical research into the links between space, body, experience and consciousness.

How can we develop a scientific basis for architectural, urban and technical design? When can a design be labelled as scientific output, comparable with a scientific report? With these questions in mind, more than forty members of the Faculty of Architecture of the Delft University of Technology have described their ways of study and research. Each chapter shows the objectives, the methodology and its implementation in search for a deeper knowledge of design processes and an optimal quality of the design itself. The authors - among them architects, urban planners, social scientists, lawyers, technicians and information scientists – have widely differing backgrounds. Nevertheless, they share a great deal.
