The British Oak is a comprehensive overview of everything that the iconic oak tree signifies to Britain and its people. Archie Miles explores the rise of oak woods since the last Ice Age, placing the tree in its biological, cultural and economic context. We still speak of the 'heart of oak' that built the British Empire, such is its importance in industry, architecture and shipbuilding, while the oak's role in myth, art and literature took root in early civilisation and remains a rich imaginative resource. Included are: -Profiles of fifty of the most famous oaks in Britain with remarkable facts, stories and historic associations. -An examination of the disease, management and conservation issues facing oaks now and in the future. -Stunning photography complemented by a rich vein of archive material, much of which is published for the first time since the nineteenth century. Praise for Archie Miles: Silva has to be one of the best country books of the year, combining the opulent quality of a coffee-table book with the depth of information of a reference work. Country Life.

Quercus was the Roman word for Oak and Robur means hard and strong, as in robust. 'Mighty Oaks from Little Acorns Grow', is a famous phrase that means, great things may come from small beginnings, and this is so true when you look at what the small acorn has to go through before it can take its place in the forest, as a mighty English oak tree called Quercus Robur. This story tells you about the adventures of Quercus Robur, and shows you how it manages to survive in the forest, growing from a little acorn that relies on its body clock and natural instincts, to grow into a mighty tree. Follow its life and watch it avoid all the challenges and dangers of the natural world, the weather, insects, animals, disease and of course humans, trying to prevent it from growing into the mightiest tree in the forest. Read how this mighty oak develops from an acorn to a majestic aged tree, in a miracle of life, taking its natural place in amongst other trees in the woodlands, building a community in nature for the benefit of all the fungi, insects, birds, and animals that depend on it for their survival, and of course us humans that have used its wood and acorns in many ways through the past centuries.

On arriving here from Ireland some fourteen years ago and buying six acres of bare land, I realised that the things I missed most were the changing colour of the seasons and the smell of the deciduous woods I had spent my childhood in. Already having an extensive knowledge of Oak trees. I spent ten years collecting and planting Oaks from around the world, reading, studying and gleaning more knowledge from wherever it could be found. During this time I hunted high and low for a book on the subject but to no avail, as it transpired there was no such book. After so much research and a life time love of Oak wood lands I decided to write it myself for other. Oaks have played a great part in the evolution of my and all of our cultures and if you don’t believe it read on. The Oak is also the most obvious form of introduced flaura or fauna that I know off that has been quite advantageous to the Australian landscape, soil and wildlife rather than detrimental like so many of the other impulsive imports. This book is a simple guide to the things we didn’t know, but probably should, about the Oaks of the world. I hope you enjoy this brief summary of Oaks, as I see them, as that is my aim.
