Differentiated book* It has a historical context with research of the time-An Inquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals, is a book by the Scottish philosopher David Hume. In it, Hume argues (among other things) that the foundations of morality are based on passions and not on reason. Research on the principles of morals is a post-Research on Human Understanding. Therefore, it is often referred to as "the second investigation." It was originally published in 1751, three years after the first investigation.Hume first discusses the treaty ethics of human nature. Later he extracted and presented the ideas he proposed there in his second investigation. In his brief autobiographical work, My own life (1776), Hume states that his second research is "of all my writings, historical, philosophical or literary, incomparably the best."Hume defends his moral emotivism based on sympathy by stating that, contrary to moral rationalism, we can never make moral judgments based on reason alone. Reason deals with the facts and draws conclusions from them, but, all things being equal, it could not lead us to choose one option over the other; Only our feelings can do this.

An Enquiry concerning the Principles of Morals, first published in 1751, was the third of David Hume's major philosophical treatises. Hume's aim in this elegant and lucid work was to present in an accessible way his theory of the foundation of morality in human nature, a theory which had developed significantly since he first addressed the subject in A Treatise of Human Nature (1739-40). He considered this Enquiry to be 'of all my writings, historical, philosophical, or literary, incomparably the best'.

DISPUTES with men, pertinaciously obstinate in their principles, are, of all others, the most irksome; except, perhaps, those with persons, entirely disingenuous, who really do not believe the opinions they defend, but engage in the controversy, from affectation, from a spirit of opposition, or from a desire of showing wit and ingenuity, superior to the rest of mankind. The same blind adherence to their own arguments is to be expected in both; the same contempt of their antagonists; and the same passionate vehemence, in inforcing sophistry and falsehood. And as reasoning is not the source, whence either disputant derives his tenets; it is in vain to expect, that any logic, which speaks not to the affections, will ever engage him to embrace sounder principles.

A Treatise of Human Nature is a book by philosopher David Hume, first published in 1739. It is considered as his most important work, as well as generally one of the most influential works of philosophy. Seeking to investigate human psychology and aiming to discover the extent and force of human understanding, Hume argues that passion, and not reason, is the key to human behaviour; that our beliefs regarding cause and effect cannot be justified by reason and in fact is the result of habit and custom. Later, Hume reworked 'A Treatise of Human Nature' into two books, An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding and An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals, commenting that there were 'negligences in his former reasoning'.

Moral philosophy, or the science of human nature, may be treated after two different manners; each of which has its peculiar merit, and may contribute to the entertainment, instruction, and reformation of mankind. The one considers man chiefly as born for action; and as influenced in his measures by taste and sentiment; pursuing one object, and avoiding another, according to the value which these objects seem to possess, and according to the light in which they present themselves. As virtue, of all objects, is allowed to be the most valuable, this species of philosophers paint her in the most amiable colours; borrowing all helps from poetry and eloquence, and treating their subject in an easy and obvious manner, and such as is best fitted to please the imagination, and engage the affections. They select the most striking observations and instances from common life; place opposite characters in a proper contrast; and alluring us into the paths of virtue by the views of glory and happiness, direct our steps in these paths by the soundest precepts and most illustrious examples. They make us feel the difference between vice and virtue; they excite and regulate our sentiments; and so they can but bend our hearts to the love of probity and true honour, they think, that they have fully attained the end of all their labours.

A genuine understanding of Hume's extraordinarily rich, important, and influential moral philosophy requires familiarity with all of his writings on vice and virtue, the passions, the will, and even judgments of beauty--and that means familiarity not only with large portions of A Treatise of Human Nature, but also with An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals and many of his essays as well. This volume is the one truly comprehensive collection of Hume's work on all of these topics. Geoffrey Sayre-McCord, a leading moral philosopher and Hume scholar, has done a meticulous job of editing the texts and has provided an extensive Introduction that is at once accessible, accurate, and philosophically engaging, revealing the deep structure of Hume's moral philosophy. --Don Garrett, New York University
