This volume describes the way in which the Fabian Society works, the distinctive contributions of individuals to that work, the structure they have built and the methods they have evolved to facilitate their labours. Some Fabians are dedicated to shaping economic and social policies, speaking or writing about them and devising the political strategy by which they may be put into practice. The author consulted original material which was available for the first time which has augmented former descriptions of the society and placed incidents in a new setting.

The eighteen years when William Beveridge was Director of the LSE, saw some of the School’s greatest expansion. The years between the wars presented a number of problems discussed in this book, such as those of finding space in the heart of London, of the proper scope and method of economics, of academic self-government and of political activity by university readers of social sciences. The last chapter tells of the author’s forty years of friendship with Sidney and Beatrice Webb, using letters between him and them that had not been published before publication of this book in 1960.

This study, first published in 1983, is primarily concerned with what the British economists over the period 1860 to 1914 wrote on a range of economic and non-economic aspects of the British Empire, and the reasons for their conclusions. The attempt is also made to correct the view that mainstream British economists after 1860 were antithetical to the concept of empire. This title will be of interest to students of economic thought.

William Beveridge (1879-1963) was a key figure in the modernization of British economic and social policy who published widely on unemployment and social security. Among his most notable works and reprinted in this set are, Full Employment in a Free Society (1944), and Pillars of Security (1943). Beveridge’s Report on social insurance was published in 1942. It proposed that all people of working age should pay a weekly national insurance contribution. In return, benefits would be paid to people who were sick, unemployed, retired or widowed. Beveridge included as one of three fundamental assumptions the fact that there would be a National Health Service of some sort. Beveridge's arguments were widely accepted. He argued that welfare institutions would increase the competitiveness of British industry in the post-war period, not only by shifting labour costs like healthcare and pensions onto the public account but also by producing healthier, wealthier and more productive workers. Beveridge saw full employment as the pivot of the social welfare programme he expressed in the 1942 report. As well as making available some of Beveridge’s key, and in some case, lesser known works, this set includes as its final volume an indispensable overview of Beveridge and his prolific work.

This book provides an original overall account of the history of sociology at the London School of Economics and Political Science, where the first sociology course as part of a conventional university degree programme in the UK was taught. Thus, the book is unique in its contribution to an important part of the history and development of sociology in the UK. The chapters discuss the names that – at least until the post-war period – are identified as central to the early phase of British sociology. Husbands documents the impact and influence of these leading figures through material in numerous previously little-used archives. Also explored are the culture of LSE Sociology students, their attitudes, political orientations, and academic attainments. The reputation and influence of LSE Sociology on the general development of the subject in the UK are also assessed. The book will be of interest to sociology students and scholars wanting to know about the discipline’s history, as well as to those with a broader interest in higher education policy.

In 1939 women represented nearly one quarter of the student population in British universities. Though tantamount to a "social revolution" in the eyes of many contemporaries, the process has recieved scant attention from historians. Whilst prejudice and hostility towards women lingered on in Oxford and Cambridge, it has often been assumed that the female presence was welcomed elsewhere. The younger, civic universities commonly advertised themselves as making "no distinction of sex" in admissions, appointments, or in educational policy.; This work of social history, based on extensive archival research, examines the truth of these claims and explores the experiences of women teachers and students in this period.

The Universities And British Industry written by Michael Sanderson and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-10-11 with Education categories.

Originally published in 1972, The University and British Industry examines the lively and controversial relationship between British industry and the university. The book looks at the impact of industry on the development of British universities from the 1850s to the 1970s, and with contribution from the universities to industry through scientific research and the supply of graduate skills. The book argues that the close involvement of the universities and industry has been one of the chief beneficial forces shaping the British universities movement in the last hundred years. It gives an account of the changes which took place within the universities to make them more suitable for industries purposes, describing for example the early rise of the English civic universities, strongly financed by, and closely supporting industry. The book also considers how, during the two world wars, industry became highly reliant on the universities for the war technology, and how, despite the depression between the wars, university research and graduate employment embraced the widening opportunities of the new industries. The book also discusses the expansion of the university in the sixties and points out that industrial motives have merged with those of social justice, posing dilemmas for present and future relations between universities and industry.
