Excerpt from An Essay on Free Trade During the past few years the people of the United States have been passing through the most severe commercial crisis known to the present generation. Business has been largely prostrated ; and some branches of productive industry paralyzed: multitudes of working men have been unable to find employment by means of which to support themselves, and those dependent upon them. A long roll of shattered fortunes and bankrupt estates add the finishing stroke to the otherwise sad and gloomy picture. We naturally inquire what is the cause? To my mind government is largely at fault. The men who controlled the national councils, and framed our laws from 1861 to 1867 inclusive, departed from a fundamental principle of political economy. They legislated more in the interests of monopoly than with an eye single to the public good, thereby largely augmenting and prolonging the evils inevitably resulting from our civil war. From Here To Free Trade written by Ernest H. Preeg and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-05-13 with Business & Economics categories.

In his new book, Ernest Preeg analyzes international trade and investment in the 1990s and lays out a comprehensive U.S. trade strategy for the uncertain period ahead. He examines the influence of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and argues that economic globalization is beneficial to the U.S. economy in the short- to medium-term while raising important questions about national sovereignty and security over the longer term. Preeg believes regional free trade agreements will soon encompass the majority of world trade, but they can conflict with the WTO's multilateral objectives. The central challenge for U.S. trade strategy, then, is to integrate the now largely separate multilateral and regional tracks of the world trading system. The first essay assesses U.S. interests in economic globalization, the second examines recent steps toward free trade at the multilateral and regional levels, and the next three offer an in-depth critique of U.S. regional free trade objectives in the Americas, across the Pacific, and possibly with Europe. The final essay presents a multilateral/regional synthesis for going from here to free trade over the coming decade.

What S Wrong With Protectionism written by Pierre Lemieux and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-08-27 with Political Science categories.

Putting tariffs on imported goods or setting other barriers to international trade can be tempting for politicians. They assume that many of their constituents believe that free trade is not fair trade and that other countries aren’t playing by the rules. This belief makes it easy for industry leaders to demand protection for their businesses and their workers—to “put America first.” But Americans should resist the siren calls of protectionism. In this highly relevant protectionism primer, Pierre Lemieux shows what can happen if they don’t. As the author demonstrates, trade between any two countries is fair for the same reasons as exchange between two individuals: it is to the benefit of both. Lemieux carefully refutes the arguments of those who would curtail Americans’ access to the benefits of international commerce—from the claim that we can boost economic growth by reducing imports to the belief that free trade leads to “shipping jobs overseas.” Yes, manufacturing jobs are declining in this country and have been since the 1950s. But, as Lemieux points out, that’s in large part because Americans are making more advanced products more efficiently—that’s our comparative advantage. And this is happening as less-developed countries are producing more labor-intensive, low-tech goods—that’s their comparative advantage. All parties to a trade benefit. Lemieux shows how free trade improves the lives of American consumers, especially the poor. The narrow agenda of the protectionists—to protect a small minority of producers at the expense of millions of their fellow Americans—is the wrong path for an increasingly diverse and complex economy. This concise primer shows you why.
