Scientists are often seen as meticulous and impartial individuals solely devoted to their study and the search for scientific truth. But a deeper analysis reveals that many of them are highly egocentric and sensitive to their public image and its associated privileges. Egocentrism, elitism, strategic media occupation and self-enhancement strategies are some of the first particularities that strike a newcomer to the academic world. An Essay on Science and Narcissism analyses the influence of narcissism, an important human personality dimension, on science. The central idea is that narcissism is an advantageous trait for succeeding in an academic environment. Scientists with a high ego are better at convincing others of the importance of their research and, as excellent networkers, they are well placed to exploit the different facets of the research system. In Genomics with Care Mike Fortun presents an experimental ethnography of contemporary genomics, analyzing science as a complex amalgam of cognition and affect, formal logics and tacit knowledge, statistics, and ethics. Fortun examines genomics in terms of care—a dense composite of affective and cognitive forces that drive scientists and the relations they form with their objects of research, data, knowledge, and community. Reading genomics with care shows how each resists definition yet is so entangled as to become indistinguishable. Fortun analyzes four patterns of genomic care—curation, scrupulousness, solicitude, and friendship—seen in the conceptual, technological, social, and methodological changes that transpired as the genetics of the 1980s became the genomics of the 1990s, and then the “post-genomics” of the 2000s. For over half a century, the biologist Barry Commoner has been one of the most prominent and charismatic defenders of the American environment, appearing on the cover of Time magazine in 1970 as the standard-bearer of "the emerging science of survival." In Barry Commoner and the Science of Survival, Michael Egan examines Commoner's social and scientific activism and charts an important shift in American environmental values since World War II.Throughout his career, Commoner believed that scientists had a social responsibility, and that one of their most important obligations was to provide citizens with accessible scientific information so they could be included in public debates that concerned them. Egan shows how Commoner moved naturally from calling attention to the hazards of nuclear fallout to raising public awareness of the environmental dangers posed by the petrochemical industry. He argues that Commoner's belief in the importance of dissent, the dissemination of scientific information, and the need for citizen empowerment were critical planks in the remaking of American environmentalism. Commoner's activist career can be defined as an attempt to weave together a larger vision of social justice. Since the 1960s, he has called attention to parallels between the environmental, civil rights, labor, and peace movements, and connected environmental decline with poverty, injustice, exploitation, and war, arguing that the root cause of environmental problems was the American economic system and its manifestations. He was instrumental in pointing out that there was a direct association between socioeconomic standing and exposure to environmental pollutants and that economics, not social responsibility, was guiding technological decision making. The Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI) is a test that was developed by Raskin and Hall (1979) in order to measure the personality trait of narcissism for research in social psychology. It is the most commonly used test to measure Narcissism, in fact, it is used in over 75% of studies on Narcissism and is based on the definition found in the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Research suggests that there are two variants of Narcissism: Grandiose narcissism which is characterized by arrogance, over-inflation of one’s qualities such as talent or intelligence, sense of entitlement, as well as the tendency to denigrate others in order to boost their own self-esteem. Vulnerable Narcissism on the other hand, is characterized by self-inhibition, and the desire for approval by others and emotional instability, but vulnerable narcissists still have unrealistically high expectations of themselves, such as the attainment of unlimited power and money and personal features such as beauty. The NPI was not meant to be used for diagnostic purposes, that is, for the clinical diagnosis of Narcissistic Personality Disorder, which is a mental illness characterized by an extremely fragile sense of self and significant life impairments. This disorder is generally assessed by using other tests such as the Pathological Narcissism Inventory (PNI). The NPI is intended to measure the normal (sub-clinical) levels of narcissism that can be commonly found among the general population. This means that even if an individual obtains a high score on the NPI, it may not mean that they have Narcissistic Personality Disorder per se.
