Excerpt from An Essay on the Education of the Blind The instant of their birth, or by some early accident in the course of their lives, of that organ which most sensibly contributes to our enjoyment of the delights and advantages arising from society, there have been found some who, by the pregnancy of their genius, and the force and perseverance of its exertions, have found out for themselves certain employments, which they were able to execute, and by these pursuits have proved successful in alleviating the miseries of a situation, in itself so afflicting. Some of them, full of penetration, have enriched their memories with productions of genius, and have imbibed from the charms of conversation or from reading, at which they were happily present, knowledge of a nature and extent which it was impossible for them either to acquire or collect from their own internal resources alone, or from the precious repositories in which it was confined. Others, endued with a dexterity, which might do honour to the most enlightened artist, have performed mechanical tasks with an exactness, neatness, and symmetry, which could only have been expected from hands informed and regulated by the advantage of sight. But in spite of these happy dispositions in the blind, these marvellous exhibitions, which ought rather to be called prodigies, than natural events, could only be, in the persons by whom they were displayed, the slow results of indefatigable industry and. Excerpt from History of the Education of the Blind No up-to-date treatise on the important and interesting subject of "The History of the Education of the Blind" being in existence in this country, and the lack of such a text-book specially designed for the teachers in our blind schools being grievously felt, I have, in response to repeated requests, taken in hand the compilation of such a book from all sources at my command, adding at the same time sundry notes and comments of my own, which the experience of a quarter of a century in blind work has led me to think may be of service to those who desire to approach and carry on their work as teachers of the blind as well equipped with information specially suited to their requirements as circumstances will permit. It is but due to the juvenile blind in our schools that the men and women to whom their education is entrusted should not only be acquainted with the mechanical means of teaching through the tactile sense, but that they should also be so steeped in blind lore that it becomes second nature to them to think of and see things from the blind person's point of view. Paradoxical as the latter phrase may appear, it is none the less an absolute fact. It is necessary for a teacher to realise and to thoroughly appreciate the difficulties which his pupil has to encounter, before he can satisfactorily remove them. Excerpt from A New Era in the Education of Blind Children: Or Teaching the Blind in Ordinary Schools A few words in the way of preface may be said as to the discussion of the. Idea of educating the blind with the sighted. Mr. Bird, of London, has, for twenty-five voars, advocated this cause, bv publication and correspondence, under the name of the home and social system. Mr. Martin, Royal Blind Asylum, Edinburgh, has for fifteen years. There and elsewhere, urged the education of the blind in sighted schools, and the Directors of the same institution have used their influence in the same cause. Several books written about the blind have expressed approval of the principle; an individual schoolmaster here and there, each after his own fashion, has kindly received and taught any blind child he met, and it is known that several young men have passed through the Uni' versities, which is an illustration of the same principle. Rev. Mr. Blackstoek, the late teacher of the Mission, much encouraged the prosecution of this movement, and was at the head of a Society of the Blind in Glasgow, which entered heartily into the matter by sending circulars containing the first account of the Greenock system, and the testimony of Mr. Kay and others, to various Mem bers of Parliament, and also a Memorial to the Lord Advocate. The President of the Glasgow Mission used most earnest means with various Members of Parliament, which did very much to secure the recognition of the claims of the blind in the Education Bill. To him, therefore, these named above and others, more especially the Greenock friends who wrought out the experiment, as well as to George Anderson, Esq., and Sir David vvedderburn, Bart, whose amendment was agreed to, making provision for the education of the blind, the thanks of the country are eminently due. Excerpt from From Homer to Helen Keller: A Social and Educational Study of the Blind HE studies here presented in revised and enlarged form were first printed in two parts, in March, 1924, and February, 1925, under a title no longer fitting. Many friends and critics almost immedi ately urged publication of a new and revised edition in more suitable type and binding. After seeing how great a demand there was for the copies as originally printed, the writer became convinced that an enlarged and somewhat popularized edition was really in demand, and after a talk with Robert B. Irwin, Executive Director of the American Foundation for the Blind, New York City, he began the recasting and revision of materials with a view to early pub lication. Much in the earlier studies was. Excerpt from Ten Years of Psychological Research in Schools for the Blind In every large library one may find numerous titles having reference to the blind. The special reference libraries of Perkins Institution for the Blind and of The Pennsylvania Institution for the Instruction of the Blind contain the few books and articles there are which deal specifically with the psychology of the blind, many books having chapters upon the subject, and a large collection of biographies and stories in which the authors attempt to delineate blind personalities. Is not a new study of the psychology of the blind superfluous? Unfortunately, for our purposes, a considerable number of these books and articles are essentially unscientific and must be classed as lit erature of opinion rather than as literature of fact. By the former we mean the writings of blind persons or others which are founded upon casual observations and life experience, while the literature of fact would include only the writings of trained scientists based upon experiments carefully planned and conscientiously executed. In the literature of Opinion one expects to find hearsay evidence, heated argument, and the most contradictory statements. In the literature of fact one expects a cautious attitude with guarded statements which arouse belief because of the evidence cited in proof. Thoughtful blind writers realize the state of affairs and express their feelings in no uncertain terms. Clarence Hawkes writes: There is probably no abnormal condition of life so little understood and appreciated and about which so much that is erroneous has been written as that of blindness, and Librarian Sherman C. Swift. In an unpublished essay on the psychology of the blind, calls the blind The Unknown Folk. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from History and Prospectus: Tennessee School for the Blind The reader of the succeeding pages can not fail to be impressed by one remarkable and gratifying fact, viz., that charity, like science and mechanics, has experienced a remarkable advance in the last quarter of a century; and, also, that no class, among the many dependent or defective classes, has made such rapid strides to independence of charitable assistance as the blind people of the United States. There was a time when the blind were regarded and treated as mendicants; when, in Europe they begged at the church-doors, while in the United States they went from house to house seeking alms. The evolution from mendicancy to self-support was not made at a single bound, but by slow stages. At any rate, the asylum was made an abode for the blind after the blind ceased to be mendicants and long before they had solved the problem of self-help. There is no nobler charity than that which leads a dependent class to independence of want by qualifying them for positions in which they can earn an adequate and honorable support. By this process they become free men and free women. Having, then, clearly shown their ability to support themselves, the blind have the same right to education that their more fortunate fellows With sight enjoy. The schools, therefore, for the blind should not be overlooked; for they not only give an education to their inmates, but they open a sure and safe way to self-supporting employment.
