ABSTRACT: Resilience has been defined to include the recovery from traumatic experiences (Block & Block, 1980, and Bonanno (2005), but this assumption had not been empirically tested until now. By using the Ego-Resiliency Scale (Klohnen, 1996), the Trauma Recovery Scale (Gentry, 2006), part of the Traumagram Questionnaire (Figley, 1989), and the Impact of Events Scale - Revised (Weiss & Marmar, 1997), this idea was tested in a non-clinical sample of 242 social work students from Florida State University. It was found that resilience and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder were inversely related as expected, but not significantly. With a Pearson Product correlation coefficient of -.077, it would only be statistically significant at the .268 level. These findings provide evidence that resilience does not mean recovery from traumatic experiences. This new data will require further research exploration to clarify what is meant by resilience.

This book challenges the assumptions of the event-dominated DSM model of posttraumatic stress disorder. Bowmam examines a series of questions directed at the current mental health model, reviewing the empirical literature. She finds that the dose-response assumptions are not supported; the severity of events is not reliable associated with PTSD, but is more reliably associated with important pre-event risk factors. She reviews evidence showing the greater role of individual differences including trait negative affectivity, belief systems, and other risk factors, in comparison with event characteristics, in predicting the disorder. The implications for treatment are significant, as treatment protocols reflect the DSM assertion that event exposure is the cause of the disorder, implying it should be the focus of treatment. Bowman also suggests that an event focus in diagnosis anad treatment risks increases the disorder because it does not provide sufficient attention to important pre-exisiting risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) represents a significant public health problem involving pronounced adverse psychological comorbidities, physical ailments, and social deficits. Therefore, it is imperative to better understand the relationship between potentially traumatic event (PTE) exposure and stress-related outcomes across the adult lifespan. METHODS: A community sample (N=511) was recruited using Qualtrics Panels and grouped by age/cohort demographics. An Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was first conducted to identify distinct clusters of latent PTE factors based on event exposure and appraisal. These latent factors were then used in a Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) to identify distinct patterns of exposure risk. Finally, age and various trauma-related characteristics were explored as predictors and outcomes of profile membership. RESULTS: EFA revealed four distinct factors of PTEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences, High Intentionality Violence Across the Lifespan, Situational Deprivation, and Low Intentionality/Agency Adversity). These four factors were then used within the LPA model discovering three distinct profiles of risk (Overall Low Risk, Moderately High Risk, and Overall High Risk). Based on this 3-class model, older adults were more likely (4x) to be in the low-risk profile compared to their younger counterparts. The low-risk profile was associated with higher levels of physical and mental wellness, resilience, and distress tolerance, and lower levels of PTSD. There was no significant difference between the moderately-high and overall high-risk profiles, which were associated with lower mental and physical health scores, levels of resilience and distress tolerance, and greater PTSD severity. However, on average, participants within the overall high-risk profile met criteria for PTSD. They displayed low levels of resilience compared to the moderately high-risk group who reported subclinical levels of PTSD and normal levels of resilience. Both high-risk groups were associated with low levels of distress tolerance. IMPLICATIONS: Study findings have the potential to improve predictive vulnerability models based on specific exposures and their subsequent effects, drive tailored interventions and assessments that are developmentally and culturally informed, and both create and mobilize actionable protective resources that can promote resilience in the face of adversity across the adult lifespan. Recommendations are outlined at each level of prevention.

Posttraumatic social interactions are among the most robust predictors of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following trauma, but social interactions have been widely defined and quantified in the literature. This study explored whether negative social interactions were more strongly associated with PTSD symptoms than positive interactions among adults recently exposed to a traumatic event, as well as factors that moderate these associations. Participants (N = 149) were assessed by the clinicianadministered PTSD scale and completed self-reported measures of social interactions and disclosure style. Only negative social interactions, specifically general societal disapproval and disapproval from family and friends, emerged as significant predictors of PTSD severity in a multiple regression analysis. Sex, trauma type, and dysfunctional disclosure style did not moderate relationships between negative social interactions and PTSD severity. Findings imply that negative social interactions may be more integral to trauma recovery than positive ones. Clinical implications are discussed.
