Material processing techniques that employ severe plastic deformation have evolved over the past decade, producing metals, alloys and composites having extraordinary properties. Variants of SPD methods are now capable of creating monolithic materials with submicron and nanocrystalline grain sizes. The resulting novel properties of these materials has led to a growing scientific and commercial interest in them. They offer the promise of bulk nanocrystalline materials for structural; applications, including nanocomposites of lightweight alloys with unprecedented strength. These materials may also enable the use of alternative metal shaping processes, such as high strain rate superplastic forming. Prospective applications for medical, automotive, aerospace and other industries are already under development.

The Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center has con ducted the Sagamore Army Materials Research Conference in coop eration with the Materials Science Group of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science of Syracuse University since 1954. The purpose of the conference has been to gather to gether scientists and engineers from academic institutions, in dustry and government who are uniquely qualified to explore in depth a subject of importance to the Army, the Department of Defense and the scientific community. This volume, Advances in Deformation Processing, addresses the areas of Analytical Advances, Workability, Processing to Optimize Properties, Advanced Applications - Materials, and Advanced Applications - Processes. The dedicated assistance of Mr. Joseph Bernier of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center throughout the stages of the conference planning and finally the publication of the Sagamore Conference Proceedings is deeply appreciated. The support of Helen Brown DeMascio of Syracuse University in p- paring the final manuscript is acknowledged. The continued active interest and support of these conferences by Dr. A. E. Gorum, Director of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center, is appreciated. Syracuse University Syracuse, New York The Editors vii Contents SESSION I INTRODUCTION A. E. Mechanics of Materials in Modern Manufacturing Methods and Processing Techniques provides a detailed overview of the latest developments in the mechanics of modern metal forming manufacturing. Focused on mechanics as opposed to process, it looks at the mechanical behavior of materials exposed to loading and environmental conditions related to modern manufacturing processes, covering deformation as well as damage and fracture processes. The book progresses from forming to machining and surface-treatment processes, and concludes with a series of chapters looking at recent and emerging technologies. Other topics covered include simulations in autofrettage processes, modeling strategies related to cutting simulations, residual stress caused by high thermomechanical gradients and pultrusion, as well as the mechanics of the curing process, forging, and cold spraying, among others. Some non-metallic materials, such as ceramics and composites, are covered as well. Synthesizes the latest research in the mechanics of modern metal forming processes Suggests theoretical models and numerical codes to predict mechanical responses Covers mechanics of shot peening, pultrusion, hydroforming, magnetic pulse forming Considers applicability of different materials and processes for optimum performance

Plane-Strain Slip-Line Fields for Metal-Deformation Processes: A Source Book and Bibliography provides information pertinent to the theory and application of plain-train slip fields to metal-working problems. This book discusses the industrial importance of axial symmetry. Organized into seven chapters, this book begins with an overview of the oldest processes of metal forming, including forging, coining, hammering, drifting, cutting, or parting. This text then examines the basic aspects of the basic theory of classical plasticity. Other chapters consider the governing equations of the plane plastic flow of a rigid-perfectly plastic solid. This book discusses as well the methods for the solution of problems of plane plastic flow of a rigid-perfectly plastic solid. The final chapter deals with the application of the theory of plasticity to the quasi-static plane-strain deformation of an isotropic rigid-perfectly plastic, rate insensitive material. This book is a valuable resource for mechanical engineers, materials scientists, teachers, and research workers.
