The ongoing revolution in military affairs is transforming the nature of warfare. Modern combat systems are increasingly more effective yet more complex to operate. Nonetheless, their complexities cannot be compared to human behaviors which remain the most important factor in combat. Within Project Albert, an agent-based model called SOCRATES has been developed to enable users to explore the emergent behaviors of the agents. A deep operation scenario is developed to explore the effects of human factors on combat outcomes. Two experimental designs are used in this investigation: A Latin Hypercube and a Full-Factorial Design. Using the computing facilities at NPS, MITRE and MHPCC (Maui High Performance Computing Center), a total of 174,960 runs are made. The data suggest the existence of emergent patterns, and provide some insights into the question of how much more capable a smaller force must be in order to effectively battle a larger force. In addition, the analysis shows that the Latin Hypercube Design is able to identify the same significant factors in the scenario as are obtained by the Factorial Design, but with much fewer runs.

This thesis identifies those human factors which impact on a commander's decision in a tactical combat environment. Various models for categorization are discussed. The study argues that in order to establish clear causal/effect relationships between human factors and battle outcome, concentration of analytical research must focus on first order effects. Two categorical judgment surveys in the form of questionnaires are developed. Results from the surveys are transformed to interval scales. The first survey is exploratory in nature and allows respondents to apply 27 endogenous factors within a generic tactical context. The second survey presents four specific tactical scenarios in which the top seven factors identified in the first survey can be applied. Respondent selection for the first survey represented the four military services while respondent selection for the second survey was limited to Army officers. The study concludes that the top seven factors are: Leadership, Training/Experience, Initiative, Discipline, Cohesion, Morale, and Will/Motivation. The rank order and scaled magnitudes of these factors are found to be scenario dependent.

This edited book presents an array of approaches on how human factors theory and research addresses the challenges associated with combat identification. Special emphasis is placed on reducing human error that leads to fratricide, which is the unintentional death or injury of friendly personnel by friendly weapons during an enemy engagement. Although fratricide has been a concern since humans first engaged in combat operations, it gained prominence during the Persian Gulf War. To reduce fratricide, advances in technological approaches to enhance combat identification (e.g., Blue Force Tracker) should be coupled with the application of human factors principles to reduce human error. The book brings together a diverse group of authors from academic and military researchers to government contractors and commercial developers to provide a single volume with broad appeal. Human Factors Issues in Combat Identification is intended for the larger human factors community within academia, the military and other organizations that work with the military such as government contractors and commercial developers as well as others interested in combat identification issues including military personnel and policy makers.

Military conflicts, particularly land combat, possess the characteristics of complex adaptive systems: combat forces are composed of a large number of nonlinearly interacting parts and are organized in a dynamic command-and-control network; local action, which often appears disordered, self-organizes into long-range order; military conflicts, by their nature, proceed far from equilibrium; military forces adapt to a changing combat environment; and there is no master “voice” that dictates the actions of every soldier (i.e., battlefield action is decentralized). Nonetheless, most modern “state of the art” military simulations ignore the self-organizing properties of combat. This book summarizes the results of a multiyear research effort aimed at exploring the applicability of complex adaptive systems theory to the study of warfare, and introduces a sophisticated multiagent-based simulation of combat called EINSTein. EINSTein, whose bottom-up, generative approach to modeling combat stands in stark contrast to the top-down or reductionist philosophy that still underlies most conventional military models, is designed to illustrate how many aspects of land combat may be understood as self-organized, emergent phenomena. Used worldwide by the military operations research community, EINSTein has pioneered the simulation of combat on a small to medium scale by using autonomous agents to model individual behaviors and personalities rather than hardware.

This study was designed to provide empirical data which would show what relationship existed among nine human factors and combat effectiveness of soldiers on the battlefield. These human factors were: leadership, training, combat experience, perception of survival possibility, acceptance by the unit, fatigue, hunger, the ability to withstand fire, and a soldier's belief in what he was doing was right. The study focused upon a sample of fifty Army infantry battalion commanders within the continental United States who had served as small-unit combat leaders in Vietnam. Data was obtained by the use of a mailed survey. The respondents tended to agree that among all of the human factors, leadership was strongly related to combat effectiveness. Among the nine human factors, respondents felt that leadership and training were the most important human factors relating to combat effectiveness. The respondents commented extensively that cohesion, training, belief in what they were doing, and leadership were the main motivators behind the soldier's willingness to fight. (Author).
