* An astonishing tale of perseverance * Wonderful insight into 19th century Tibet * A moving tale of adventure and discovery In the late 1800's, when women were bound by both cumbersome clothing and strict Victorian morals, a small band of astonishing women explorers burst forth to claim the adventurous life. What drew the five profiled in this book -- three British, one American, one French -- was Tibet, then the ultimate in exploration. Nina Mazuchelli organized a small expedition, urging the party on when they were lost on a glacier. Annie Taylor, a reckless, romantic missionary in China, knew her life was in danger the moment she crossed into Tibet. Esabella Bird Bishop, sickly while at home, was always robust on her adventures; she was nearly 60 when she went to Tibet. Fanny Bullock Workman plowed her way up Himalaya and Karakoram mountains, saying any woman could do so. Alexandra David-Neel, at 56, trekked for eight months through tropical lowlands and snow-covered passes with only a backpack and a begging bowl. Even by today's standards these women's accomplishments are remarkable.

By the middle of the nineteenth century the English were beginning to enjoy the fruits of their colonial empire. Military strategy and the political considerations, along with pressure from their intelligentsia for the safety of their colonial empire, and of course geographical expediencies forced the English authorities in the later half of the nineteenth century to begin seriously to collect information, both geographical and of general nature, about the vast terra incognita that was there all along the land frontiers of India since the prehistoric age. These were the regions where the English could travel in those days only at the risk to their lives. Strategically, they opted for sending the natives of the border region who were accustomed to frequent Tibet, Turkestan and the adjacent regions since early historical period for trade and religious pilgrimages. With the creation of the Establishment for Trans-Himalayan Exploration in 15 May 1863, and trained with elementary survey instruments the explorers began to systematically infiltrate in the northern regions in various disguises. The present work is mostly based on their diaries' and reports' submitted to the Survey department. Part I describes the beauty of the rugged country including its geographical and geological growth in much detail for the first time. The social, economic, cultural and religious activities of life in Tibet are very diligently described by the Indian explorers in Part II.

Women Explorers chronicles the lives of six intrepid women whose hunger for adventure and knowledge compelled them on paths of discovery around the world. Their discoveries not only brought stores of information on topics ranging from ancient dinosaur fossils to life in Tibet, but also challenged the established roles of women in their fields. From the age of five, Alexandra David-Neel longed for adventure and freedom from the societal expectations of women in nineteenth-century Europe. She traveled to Asia where she learned about Eastern religions and cultures and became the first non-Asian woman to enter the forbidden Tibetan city of Lhasa.

This book is an account of the iconic expedition through Tibet. It was one of the first expeditions of the kind, and it had a tremendous role in the development of Tibetan geographics. The explorer and author, Hedin, was the first European to reach the sacred and legendary Mount Kailash. According to the Buddhist tradition, this mountain is the midpoint of the Earth. He started the expedition in 1906 from the Central Persian desert basins and the western Tibetan highlands. Then, he crossed the Transhimalaya region and discovered new territories. Later, the area of his route was called the Hedin Range. Then, he visited the 9th Pachen Lama in Shigatse. After, he reached the Indus and Brahmaputra rivers' sources and descended the Indus returning home. One of the most significant achievements of this journey is mapping the previously unknown areas of Tibetan highlands. Yet, Hedin wasn't just a prominent explorer but a great storyteller too. From the first pages of the captivating memoir, a reader's attention is entirely absorbed by the vivid description of the exotic places and adventures. Those days, the Indian and Tibetan region was a total mystery for a European. Now, a century on, we know just a little more. So, it is exciting to read about the cultures that are now distant to us geographically and historically. Another bonus you get from this book is a feeling of pioneering. What does a person feel, knowing that they are the first European in Tibet? How is it leaving your home for a long journey full of dangers? You can read about all these things in this beautiful realistic, and captivating memoir.
