In the pursuit of ever increasing productivity, the need to be able to measure specific aspects of software is generally agreed upon. As object oriented programming languages are becoming more and more widely used, metrics specifically designed for object oriented software are required. In recent years there has been an explosion of new, object oriented software metrics proposed in the literature. Unfortunately, many or most of these proposed metrics have not been validated to measure what they claim to measure. In fact, an analysis of many of these metrics shows that they do not satisfy basic properties of measurement theory, and thus their application has to be suspect. In this paper ten improved metrics are proposed and are validated using measurement theory. Neal, Ralph D. and Weistroffer, H. Roland and Coppins, Richard J. On behalf of the PROFES Organizing Committee we are proud to present the proce- th ings of the 10 International Conference on Product Focused Software Process - provement (PROFES 2009), held in Oulu, Finland. Since the first conference in 1999, the conference has established its place in the software engineering community as a respected conference that brings together participants from academia and industry. The roots of PROFES are in professional software process improvement motivated by product and service quality needs. The conference addresses both the solutions found in practice as well as relevant research results from academia. To ensure that PROFES retains its high quality and focus on the most relevant research issues, the conference has actively maintained close collaboration with industry and sub- quently widened its scope to the research areas of collaborative and agile software development. A special focus for 2009 was placed on software business to bridge research and practice in the economics of software engineering. This enabled us to cover software development in a more comprehensive manner and tackle one of the most important current challenges identified by the software industry and software research community – namely, the shift of focus from “products” to “services. ” The current global economic downturn emphasizes the need for new methods and so- tions for fast and business-oriented development of products and services in a gl- ally distributed environment.

On behalf of the PROFES Organizing Committee, we are proud to present to you the proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Product-Focused Software Process Improvement (PROFES 2008) held in Frascati - Monteporzio Catone, Rome, Italy. Since 1999, PROFES has established itself as one of the recognized international process improvement conferences. The main theme of PROFES is professional so- ware process improvement (SPI) motivated by product and service quality needs. Focussing on a product to be developed, PROFES 2008 addressed both quality en- neering and management topics including processes, methods, techniques, tools, - ganizations, and enabling SPI. Both solutions found in practice and the relevant research results from academia were presented. Domains such as the automotive and mobile applications industry are growing r- idly, resulting in a strong need for professional development and improvement. Nowadays, the majority of embedded software is developed in collaboration, and distribution of embedded software development continues to increase. Thus, PROFES 2008 addressed different development modes, roles in the value chain, stakeholders’ viewpoints, collaborative development, as well as economic and quality aspects. - ile development was included again as one of the themes. Since the beginning of the series of PROFES conferences, the purpose has been to bring to light the most recent findings and novel results in the area of process - provement, and to stimulate discussion among researchers, experienced professionals, and technology providers from around the world.

Software measurement is one of the key technologies employed to control and manage the software development process. Research avenues such as the applicability of metrics, the efficiency of measurement programs in industry, and the theoretical foundations (of software engineering?) have been investigated to evaluate and improve modern software development areas such as object-orientation, compone- based develop-ment, multimedia systems design, reliable telecommunication systems etc. In the tradition of our software measurement research communities, the German Computer Science Interest (GI) Group on Software Measurement and the Canadian Interest Group in Software Metrics (CIM) have attended to these concerns in recent years. Initially, research initiatives were directed at the definition of new methods of software measurement and the validation of these methods themselves. This was then followed by more and more investigation into practical applications of software measurement and key findings in this area of software engineering have been published in: - Dumke/Zuse: Theory and Practice of Software Measurement, 1994 - Ebert/Dumke: Software-Metriken in der Praxis, 1996 - Lehner/Dumke/Abran: Software Metrics - Research and Practice in Software Measurement, 1997 - Dumke/Abran: Software Measurement - Current Trends in Research and Practice, 1999 We would also like to mention that the proceedings of the Lac Supérieur workshop have been made available on the web at www. lrgl. uqam. ca? This new book includes the proceedings of the 10th Workshop on Software Measurement held in Berlin in October 2000.

Excerpt from A Metrics Suite for Object Oriented Design Given the central role that software development plays in the delivery and application of information technology, managers are increasingly focusing on process improvement in the software development area. This demand has spurred the provision of a number of new and or improved approaches to software development, with perhaps the most prominent being object orientation (OO). In addition, the focus on process improvement has increased the demand for software measures, or metrics with which to manage the process. The need for such metrics is particularly acute when an organization is adopting a new technology for which established practices have yet to be developed. This research addresses these needs through the development and implementation of a new suite of metrics for OO design. Metrics developed in previous research, while contributing to the fields understanding of software development processes, have generally been subject to serious criticisms, including the lack of a theoretical base. Following Wand and Weber, the theoretical base chosen for the metrics was the ontology of Bunge. Six design metrics are developed, and then analytically evaluated against Weyuker's proposed set of measurement principles. An automated data collection tool was then developed and implemented to collect an empirical sample of these metrics at two field sites in order to demonstrate their feasibility and suggest ways in which managers may use these metrics for process improvement. C. Amting Directorate General Information Society, European Commission, Brussels Under the 4th Framework of European Research, the European Systems and Soft ware Initiative (ESSI) was part of the ESPRIT Programme. This initiative funded more than 470 projects in the area' of software and system process improvements. The majority of these projects were process improvement experiments carrying out and taking up new development processes, methods and technology within the software development process of a company. In addition, nodes (centres of exper tise), European networks (organisations managing local activities), training and dissemination actions complemented the process improvement experiments. ESSI aimed at improving the software development capabilities of European enterprises. It focused on best practice and helped European companies to develop world class skills and associated technologies to build the increasingly complex and varied systems needed to compete in the marketplace. The dissemination activities were designed to build a forum, at European level, to exchange information and knowledge gained within process improvement ex periments. Their major objective was to spread the message and the results of experiments to a wider audience, through a variety of different channels. The European Experience Exchange ~UR~X) project has been one of these dis semination activities within the European Systems and Software Initiative.~UR~X has collected the results of practitioner reports from numerous workshops in Europe and presents, in this series of books, the results of Best Practice achieve ments in European Companies over the last few years.
