Heat Islands written by Lisa Mummery Gartland and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-05-16 with Architecture categories.
Heat islands are urban and suburban areas that are significantly warmer than their surroundings. Traditional, highly absorptive construction materials and a lack of effective landscaping are their main causes. Heat island problems, in terms of increased energy consumption, reduced air quality and effects on human health and mortality, are becoming more pressing as cities continue to grow and sprawl. This comprehensive book brings together the latest information about heat islands and their mitigation. The book describes how heat islands are formed, what problems they cause, which technologies mitigate heat island effects and what policies and actions can be taken to cool communities. Internationally renowned expert Lisa Gartland offers a comprehensive source of information for turning heat islands into cool communities. The author includes sections on cool roofing and cool paving, explains their benefits in detail and provides practical guidelines for their selection and installation. The book also reviews how and why to incorporate trees and vegetation around buildings, in parking lots and on green roofs.

Cement is the basis of the building and construction industry and of fundamental importance for many civil engineering applications. As such, the cement industry is one of the key industries worldwide necessary for the current and future sustainable development of society. Despite its undisputed importance, the cement industry is one of those industrial branches predominately responsible for high energy consumption and excessive generation of large amounts of carbon dioxide and other contaminants that significantly endanger human health and the environment and contributes to global warming. In this context, nanomaterials, polymeric materials, and natural additives are being used for cement enhancement in various applications. This book examines these novel materials and their optimization, characterization, and sustainable application in the building industry and for stabilizing hazardous waste.

A Preliminary Structural Design Guideline For Pervious Concrete Pavement System Using Finite Element Methods written by Md. Ashraful Alam and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with categories.
At the beginning, a finite element modeling procedure has been developed using the vertical porosity distribution in pervious concrete and dividing the pervious concrete surface layer into three layers. Then, the model was validated against a field application and a factor of safety of 'Two' was proposed for repetition of truck traffic on the pavement, based on Pavement Condition Index (PCI) rating data. Finally, analyses were performed for different coefficients of friction between the layers of the pavement system. In between the finite element analyses, pervious concrete cylindrical specimens were prepared and equations were proposed to estimate the modulus of elasticity of pervious concrete for a given porosity.
