This is an introduction to the poetry of Catullus, establishing a number of contexts within which Catullus functioned. It sets out four ways in which Catullus can be seen as a modern poet: emphasis on art, on sexual themes on the individual voice, and on a brief clear style.

Although Catullus is one of the best known of the Roman poets, it is his shorter poems that are more familiar. This is the first edition of the long poems of Catullus in a single volume, which with the companion edition by John Godwin of the shorter poems completes all Catullus' surviving work. This edition aims to describe and discuss recent scholarship on the poems, seeing them in their context and in relation to each other as fully as possible. Latin text with facing-page English translation, introduction and detailed commentary.

Catullus In Verona written by Marilyn B. Skinner and has been published by Ohio State University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Literary Criticism categories.

Gaius Valerius Catullus is one of Rome's greatest surviving poets and also one of the most popular Latin authors. Comprehensive treatments of his work have been hindered, however, by the problems posed by the Catutllan collection as it has come down to us. Although many scholars now believe that Catullus did publish his verse in one or more small volumes (libelli), the theory that these books were rearranged after his death means that individual pieces continue to be read and analyzed separately, without reference to their placement within the collection. Skinner challenges this theory of posthumous editorship by offering a unified reading of Catullus' elegiac poetry (poems 65-116 in our collection) and arguing that it constitutes what was once a separately circulated libellus whose authorial arrangement has been preserved intact. Purportedly issued from the poet's native city, Verona, to his Roman readership, the volume presents itself as a valedictory. This reading of the elegiac collection represents a major departure in Catullan studies. The methodological contention that Catullus' elegiac poems are better approached as a single cohesive poetic statement makes this book a valuable new contribution to Catullan scholarship.

The Student's Catullus places its emphasis on understanding the original Latin text rather than merely translating it into English. A complete Latin-English vocabulary explains the meaning of Catullus' words; notes to each poem illuminate the meaning of his language, with explanations of word choice, word order, sound effects, and metric artistry. Historical and literary allusions are also explained, with the result that students enter deeper into the poet's world than the best English translation can suggest. The Student's Catullus makes it clear why we still read Catullus in Latin. Written to become the standard college textbook as well as a comprehensive reference, the book includes a brief introduction setting forth the known facts about the poet's life and the character of his poems, a fresh recension of all 113 poems, and a commentary in English on each poem, explaining difficult points of Latin, features of Catullus' artistry, and background information. Additional aids to the reader are a Who's Who of the most important people in Catullus' poems, an introduction to Catullan meters, a glossary of literary terms used in the commentary, a complete Catullan vocabulary, and six maps.
