Excerpt from An Introduction to English Medieval Literature The recent abundance of reprints and translations marks a second approach toward the recovery of the middle age. While the previous generation of historians was dispelling the legendary darkness of this dark age, the critics turned the connotation of Gothic from pity to praise. Pity for the middle age became so antiquated that enthusiasts ven tured even to demand worship instead. What remained for our time was more exact appreciation through an increasing availability of medieval literature. To the widely interesting body of literature now at hand in English I have tried here to furnish a students' guide. This book is not for scholars. They are provided already. What seemed to be lacking was such a brief manual as Should Open the main literary signifi cances to students not specially trained. Therefore, though the discussion necessarily includes works written in Latin and Old French, and relies, of course, on foreign as well as Eng lish scholarship, the citations and the suggestions for further study are generally limited to works accessible in English. What I have thus tried to provide is, not a substitute for close study, but an introduction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from English Literature Medieval With the Morte d'arthur. But it may occur to him to ask about the French book from which Malory got his adventures of the Knights of King Arthur; he may want to know how the legend of the Grail came to be mixed up with the romances of: the Round Table; and so he will be drawn on, trying to find out as much as possible and plunging deeper and deeper into the Middle Ages. The same kind of thing happens to the reader of Dante; Dante is found all through his poem acknowledging obligations to earlier Writers; he is not alone or independent in his thought and his poetry; and so it becomes an interest ing thing to go further back and to know some thing about the older poets and moralists, and the earlier medieval world in general, before it was all summed up and recorded in the imagination of the Divine Comedy. Ex amples of this way of reading may be found in the works of Ruskin and in Matthew Arnold: Matthew Arnold, rather late in his life (in the introductory essay to Mr. T. H. Ward's English Poets), shows that he has been reading some old French authors. He does not begin with old French when he is young. Excerpt from Essays on Medieval Literature These Essays have all been printed before. The first of them served as an introduction to the first volume of Sir Henry Craik's English Prose Selection (Macmillan, 1893). The "Similes of Dante" appeared in the Modern Quarterly for March 1898. "Boccaccio" was read as a Taylorian lecture at Oxford, and published, in most honourable company, with other lectures of the same foundation - Studies in European Literature - at the Clarendon Press, 1900. "Chaucer" (Part of a review of Mr. Skeat's edition) and the article on Mr. Macaulay's Gower are from the Quarterly Review, April 1895 and April 1903. The essay on Froissart (and on his English translator) was written at the request of Mr. W. E. Henley for the new edition of Lord Berners - The Cronykle of Syr John Froissart - in the Tudor Translations (Nutt, 1901-3). Medieval literature is separated from us by so many centuries that it may seem completely foreign, both in its concerns and its techniques. However, this literature has much to say to 21st century readers and Steinberg's book demonstrates its continuing relevance and appeal. This introduction to medieval literature provides some of the cultural context that readers need to know in order to understand the literature, such as the religious orientation of the people, often deep and sincere but sometimes treated casually or subjected to intense scrutiny. The first chapter provides a brief explanation of medieval religious thought, cosmology and intellectual history. The remaining chapters provide introductions to a number of individual works ranging from Beowulf to the works of Chaucer. Avoiding the tendency to regard the Middle Ages as an era dominated by Christian men, these discussions include works by women writers and Jewish writers and a chapter on the medieval Japanese masterpiece The Tale of Genji. Excerpt from English Industries of the Middle Ages: Being an Introduction to the Industrial History of Medieval England The rise of the capitalist and the monopolist, the social revolution of the Reformation, with the aboli tion of the monastic houses and the beginnings of the poor-law system constituted a' new era for the working classes even when unaccompanied by any startling change in methods or mechanical media. Moreover, from the middle of the sixteenth century documents and records relating to industrial matters become more numerous and more accessible, and this is therefore the usual starting-point for those who write upon these subjects. For these reasons my accounts of the various selected industries will be found to end at such dates within the sixteenth century as have seemed convenient, though I have not slavishly refrained from taking out of the seventeenth century occasional details applicable to the earlier period. Such, then, are the lines upon which I have built my book. If any critic considers that the subject should have been dealt with on another plan, he is at liberty to prove his contention by so treating it himself. Excerpt from Medieval English Verse and Prose: In Modernized Versions Layamon laid these books out, and he turned the leaves; With love he searched them, the Lord be to him gracious. He took feathers in his fingers, and he composed on parchment; And these most true words he set then together, And these three books he condensed into one. Now Layamon prayeth each noble man, 4 For the love of Almighty God and of his gracious heart, 30 Who will read these books and learn these runes, That some true words he will say together For his father's soul, who did beget him, And for his mother's soul, who bore him as man, And for his own soul, that it be the better for them. Amen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of the Middle Ages The period of time of which this book treats is that lying between the greatest splendor of the Roman Empire and the beginning of what may properly be called the Middle Ages. It is a period which has often been passed over lightly by historians or dismissed with a sneer as the Dark Ages of the world. And this was done in spite of the fact that perhaps the greatest historian, all things considered, who has ever written in the English language, chose just this period for his theme. It is not improbable that the very title of Gibbon's great work may have done its part toward creating a false impression of the time he describes. If one comes to our period as a time of Decline and Fall merely, one can hardly fail to carry away from the study of it a depressing sense of gloom and wretchedness. Gibbon himself, great historian as he was, did not succeed in avoiding this danger. His splendid narrative is on the whole a mournful one. We feel ourselves to be dealing with the wild movements of men, either half brutal or wholly brutalized. We see a magnificent edifice crumbling to decay, but we are not impressed with the elements of life contained in this very process. Excerpt from Epic and Romance Essays on Medieval Literature These essays are intended as a general description of some of the principal forms of narrative literature in the Middle Ages, and as a review Of some of the more interesting works in each period. It is hardly necessary to say that the conclusion is one in which nothing is concluded, and that whole tracts of literature have been barely touched on - the English metrical romances, the Middle High German poems, the ballads, Northern and Southern - which would require to be considered in any systematic treatment of this part of history.
