Originally published in 1990. The second volume of Victor Lowe's definitive work on Alfred North Whitehead completes the biography of one of the twentieth century's most influential yet least understood philosophers. In 1910 Whitehead abruptly ended his thirty-year association with Trinity College of Cambridge and moved to London. The intellectual and personal restlessness that precipitated this move ultimately led Whitehead—at the age of sixty-three—to settle in America and change the focus of his work from mathematics to philosophy. Volume 2 of Alfred North Whitehead: The Man and His Work follows Whitehead's journey to the United States and analyzes his expanding intellectual life. Although Whitehead wrote philosophy based on natural science while still in London, he began his most important work shortly after moving to Harvard in 1924. Science and the Modern World appeared in 1925, Religion in the Making in 1926, Symbolism in 1927, and Process and Reality in 1929. Discussing these and other important works, Lowe combines scholarly analysis with valuable insights gathered from Whitehead's friends and colleagues. Although Whitehead ordered that all his private papers be destroyed, Lowe was given access to letters the philosopher wrote to his son, North, and others. Never before published, the letters add a new personal dimension to Whitehead's life and thought. Photographs of the philosopher, his family, and associates provide an intimate look at a private and self-effacing man whose work has had a lasting impact on twentieth-century thought.

Alfred North Whitehead, an English mathematician. Best known as the defining person of the philosophical school identified as process philosophy, that has found demand in a wide variety of disciplines, including ecology, physics, economics, theology, education, biology, and psychology, amongst other areas. In his early career, A. N. Whitehead formulated primarily on mathematics, logic, and physics. His most distinguished work in these sectors is the 3 volume Principia Mathematica that he wrote together with his former student Bertrand Russell. Principia Mathematica is thought one of the twentieth century's most significant achievements in mathematical logic and is placed 23rd in a list of the top 100 nonfiction books of the century by Modern Library. Today Whitehead's works - particularly Process and Reality - are viewed as the foundational texts of process philosophy. His process view claims that "there is urgency in coming to see the world as a web of interrelated processes of that we are integral parts so that all of our decisions and actions have outcomes for the world around us." For this reason, one of the most promising applications of Whitehead's views in recent years has been in the field of ecological civilization and environmental ethics pioneered by John B. Cobb, Jr.

There is one question that any potential reader who suspects that Alfred North Whitehead (1861-1947) might be important for past, contemporary, and future philosophy inevitably raises: how should I read Whitehead? How can I make sense of this incredibly dense tissue of imaginative systematizing, spread over decades of work in disciplines so different and specialized as algebra, geometry, logic, relativistic physics and philosophy of science? Accordingly, this monograph has two main complementary objectives. The first one is to propose a set of efficient hermeneutical tools to get the reader started. These straightforward tools provide answers that are highly coherent and probably the most applicable to Whitehead's entire corpus. The second objective is to illustrate how the several parts of Process and Reality are interconnected, something that all commentators have either failed to recognise or only incompletely acknowledged.
