Excerpt from An Introduction to Modern Scientific Chemistry IN this introduction To modern scientific chemistry an attempt is made to give a succinct and accurate presentation of chemistry on strictly scientific lines, and at the same time in as popular a form as is compatible with the matter and the vast range of the subject. The book can be followed easily by anyone who takes a serious interest in natural science, and will not, I hope, be unwelcome to the younger chemists who are still pursuing their studies. A teacher of chemistry who may not have paid special attention to the methods of presenting his subject will perhaps find in the book something useful to him self and helpful to his hearers. The form followed in lectures is used as far as possible; for, by pursuing the subject in this way, the reader seems to find for himself the results that chemistry has gained; and experience has shown that this form is the most interesting and the most easily understood. Excerpt from Introduction to Modern Chemistry, Experimental and Theoretic: Embodying Twelve Lectures Delivered in the Royal College of Chemistry, London The following pages contain, in their latest form, with some additional developments, the introductory portion of the chemical course which the Author has annually delivered, during the last fifteen years, in the theatre of the Royal College of Chemistry. The juncture of chemical history at which this little book is published, and the peculiar educational necessities which that juncture implies, are reflected as well in the substance as in the method of tho work; the purport of which will, therefore, be best made known by a brief reference to the present posture of chemical affairs. No chemist will need to be reminded that, during the last quarter of a century, the science of chemistry has undergone a profound transformation; attended, during its accomplishment, by struggles so convulsive, as to represent what, in political parlance, would be appropriately termed a Revolution. Amidst continual accessions of fact, so rapid, so voluminous, and so heterogeneous, as almost to exceed the grasp of any single mind, chemical science has been in travail, so to speak, with new laws and principles of co-ordination, engendered, perhaps, partly by the sheer force of their own deeply-felt necessity, but partly also, and mainly duo, to the powerful initiative impulsion of a few philosophical master-minds. Excerpt from A d104-Book of Inorganic Chemistry I have endeavoured to obviate many of these difficulties, while still making the periodic system the foundation upon which this little book is based, by dividing the book into three parts. Part I. Contains a brief sketch of the funda mental principles and theories upon which the science' of modern chemistry is built. Into this portion of the book I have introduced, necessarily in briefest outlines, some of the more recent developments of the science in a physico-chemical direction, of which it is desirable that the student should gain some knowledge, even early in his career. Yet these are subjects of supreme importance to the student of Inorganic Chemistry, and are accordingly included in this Introduction. Excerpt from Chemistry While we do not undervalue the usefulness of a correct language to express the facts and theories of a Science, we have the strongest objection to frequent and capricious changes, in which the good is uncertain and prospective, while the evil is certain and immediate. Chemistry is not the Science of one nation, of one profession, or of one section of chemists. Among civilized nations it has now a com munity of language, and by this language, it is more closely linked to Arts, Manufactures, and Medicine, than any other branch of knowledge; hence, changes, to be useful, should be such as are re quired by urgent necessity, and are likely to command general acceptance by their reasonableness and expediency. After all, it must be remembered that these changes are not in the facts, but in a supposed improvement in the mode of expressing them; and if only partially adopted, they necessarily lead to confusion. Reasoning from the past to the present, it is not too much to infer that a student of Chemistry must be prepared for a new crop of systematic names, and a new classification of elements and compounds, every ten years. Our intention in the preparation of this volume has been, not to furnish a Treatise on the Science, but to provide the student, and general reader, with a plain introduction to the subject. With ample materials at our disposal to produce two volumes in place of one, we have studiously endeavored to compress within these pages, a selection of the more important facts and doctrines of Modern Chemistry. We have adopted for the explanation of these facts, that simple chemical language which has found acceptance in the Schools and Colleges of Great Britain, France, and Germany, as well as in the best treatises on the Science. In addition to the general properties of bodies, we have attached to the description of each substance, a summary of its most important characters, with an account of the special tests required for its detec tion. The student will thus have in this book a Manual of practical chemistry. As an adjunct to this branch of the Science, the subject of practical toxicology has been introduced in reference to the most important poisons, and the processes for their detection. We have also treated, as fully as our space would permit. The chemical principles on which photography is based, and have given some practical rules for the guidance of those who wish to apply their chemical knowledge to this interesting art. Excerpt from An Introduction to Chemical Philosophy According to the Modern Theories At. A time when the philosophy bof chemistry is becoming more and more clearly apprehended, we need to be reminded of its historical development. The more acute and profound our co-ordination and interpretation of phenomena, the 'more careful should be our scrutiny of the successive views regarding them, which have been previously held. Such a scrutiny will serve two useful purposes, for it will correct two common and erroneous modes of thought. Thus, the technical terms finally adopted in the expression of chemical facts will cease to be vague - they will acquire a constant as well as a definite meaning; and at the same, time, that narrowness of vision, which sees everything in one aspect only, will be duly enlarged.
