Overview The subject of partial differential equations has an unchanging core of material but is constantly expanding and evolving. The core consists of solution methods, mainly separation of variables, for boundary value problems with constant coeffi cients in geometrically simple domains. Too often an introductory course focuses exclusively on these core problems and techniques and leaves the student with the impression that there is no more to the subject. Questions of existence, uniqueness, and well-posedness are ignored. In particular there is a lack of connection between the analytical side of the subject and the numerical side. Furthermore nonlinear problems are omitted because they are too hard to deal with analytically. Now, however, the availability of convenient, powerful computational software has made it possible to enlarge the scope of the introductory course. My goal in this text is to give the student a broader picture of the subject. In addition to the basic core subjects, I have included material on nonlinear problems and brief discussions of numerical methods. I feel that it is important for the student to see nonlinear problems and numerical methods at the beginning of the course, and not at the end when we run usually run out of time. Furthermore, numerical methods should be introduced for each equation as it is studied, not lumped together in a final chapter.

An Introduction to Partial Differential Equations with MATLAB®, Second Edition illustrates the usefulness of PDEs through numerous applications and helps students appreciate the beauty of the underlying mathematics. Updated throughout, this second edition of a bestseller shows students how PDEs can model diverse problems, including the flow of heat, the propagation of sound waves, the spread of algae along the ocean’s surface, the fluctuation in the price of a stock option, and the quantum mechanical behavior of a hydrogen atom. Suitable for a two-semester introduction to PDEs and Fourier series for mathematics, physics, and engineering students, the text teaches the equations based on method of solution. It provides both physical and mathematical motivation as much as possible. The author treats problems in one spatial dimension before dealing with those in higher dimensions. He covers PDEs on bounded domains and then on unbounded domains, introducing students to Fourier series early on in the text. Each chapter’s prelude explains what and why material is to be covered and considers the material in a historical setting. The text also contains many exercises, including standard ones and graphical problems using MATLAB. While the book can be used without MATLAB, instructors and students are encouraged to take advantage of MATLAB’s excellent graphics capabilities. The MATLAB code used to generate the tables and figures is available in an appendix and on the author’s website.

Intended for undergraduate students in math, science, and engineering, this text uses MATLAB software to expand the introduction of differential equations from the core topics of solution techniques for boundary value problems with constant coefficients to topics less common for an introductory text such as nonlinear problems and brief discussions of numerical methods. The Schrodinger equation is dicussed as a dispersive equation and the LaPlace and Poisson equations are treated. Finite difference schemes are used to compute solutions. Some mfiles to implement basic finite difference schemes have been included. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Partial differential equations are a vital part of any course in pure or applied mathematics. This book will be invaluable to anyone looking for a lucid but comprehensive introduction to PDEs. Designed to strike a balance between theory and practical problems, it covers all major methods as well as their historical backgrounds, theoretical rigour, and geometric significance. The book is divided into three parts. It starts with basic topics like ordinary differential equations, multivariable calculus, and geometry. This is followed by important techniques to solve certain types of partial differential equations. The last part is devoted to first, second, and higher-order PDEs. The chapters have been arranged to help students develop their knowledge gradually and systematically. Each method is discussed through theoretical descriptions in the form of theorems followed by illustrative problems to help the readers. Finally, numerous solved examples and practice problems helps the student learn to apply this knowledge.

The book is designed for undergraduate or beginning level graduate students, and students from interdisciplinary areas including engineers, and others who need to use partial differential equations, Fourier series, Fourier and Laplace transforms. The prerequisite is a basic knowledge of calculus, linear algebra, and ordinary differential equations. The textbook aims to be practical, elementary, and reasonably rigorous; the book is concise in that it describes fundamental solution techniques for first order, second order, linear partial differential equations for general solutions, fundamental solutions, solution to Cauchy (initial value) problems, and boundary value problems for different PDEs in one and two dimensions, and different coordinates systems. Analytic solutions to boundary value problems are based on Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problems and series solutions. The book is accompanied with enough well tested Maple files and some Matlab codes that are available online. The use of Maple makes the complicated series solution simple, interactive, and visible. These features distinguish the book from other textbooks available in the related area.

Mathematics is playing an ever more important role in the physical and biological sciences, provoking a blurring of boundaries between scientific disciplines and a resurgence of interest in the modern as well as the cl- sical techniques of applied mathematics. This renewal of interest, both in research and teaching, has led to the establishment of the series: Texts in Applied Mathematics (TAM). The development of new courses is a natural consequence of a high level of excitement on the research frontier as newer techniques, such as numerical and symbolic computer systems, dynamical systems, and chaos mix with and reinforce the traditional methods of applied mathematics. Thus, the purpose of this textbook series is to meet the current and future needs of these advances and encourage the teaching of new courses. TAM will publish textbooks suitable for use in advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate courses, and will complement the Applied Ma- ematical Sciences (AMS) series, which will focus on advanced textbooks and research-level monographs. Preface "It is impossible to exaggerate the extent to which modern applied mathematics has been shaped and fueled by the g- eral availability of fast computers with large memories. Their impact on mathematics, both applied and pure, is comparable to the role of the telescopes in astronomy and microscopes in biology." — Peter Lax, Siam Rev. Vol. 31 No. 4 Congratulations! You have chosen to study partial differential equations.

This book provides an elementary yet comprehensive introduction to the numerical solution of partial differential equations (PDEs). Used to model important phenomena, such as the heating of apartments and the behavior of electromagnetic waves, these equations have applications in engineering and the life sciences, and most can only be solved approximately using computers. Numerical Analysis of Partial Differential Equations Using Maple and MATLAB provides detailed descriptions of the four major classes of discretization methods for PDEs (finite difference method, finite volume method, spectral method, and finite element method) and runnable MATLAB? code for each of the discretization methods and exercises. It also gives self-contained convergence proofs for each method using the tools and techniques required for the general convergence analysis but adapted to the simplest setting to keep the presentation clear and complete. This book is intended for advanced undergraduate and early graduate students in numerical analysis and scientific computing and researchers in related fields. It is appropriate for a course on numerical methods for partial differential equations.
