Excerpt from An Introduction to Physics: For Technical Students Many students of all ages and of all types show a marked tendency to regard certain subjects as being "useful," and others as being the reverse. No policy could have a more sinister influence on progress or place such a final limit on the student's actual usefulness in his vocation. If any of the great discoveries or inventions which have revolutionised civilisation be examined and tracked back to its source, we invariably find a man working in some apparently quite useless field of research, with no object in view other than the acquisition of knowledge. Utility never enters his head, for the stage of the work engaging his immediate attention is such that no living man is in a position to say what is "useful" and what is not. The useless of to-day may be of paramount importance to-morrow. When Volta in 1800 made his voltaic pile and obtained a feeble current of electricity, and Oersted in 1820 discovered the action of a current on a magnet; when Davy in 1821 demonstrated the power of a current to magnetise steel, and Faraday in 1831 showed that a current in one circuit could induce a current in another circuit, no one could foretell that these discoveries would lead to the production of a dynamo which, when rotated at Chelsea, could propel an electric train at Hampstead. The contemporaries of the pioneers just mentioned may have said to them: "This is all very interesting, but what is the use of it?" If they had answered: - "In less than a century these principles will enable a man in London to speak to a man in Paris," they would have been laughed at. Again, we may note that great discoveries and inventions have seldom if ever been made by one man. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This text is an introduction to the basic concepts in physics. It introduces topics in Newtonian mechanics, wave motion, optics, electricity, circuits, magnetism, and modern physics. It is set at the level of the high school or first-year college student. Mathematics background is algebra and trigonometry. The motivation behind the book is to provide an introduction to the subject that is mathematically rigorous while at the same time strips out a lot of the clutter in a standard textbook.

Intended for undergraduate non-science majors, satisfying a general education requirement or seeking an elective in natural science, this is a physics text, but with the emphasis on topics and applications in astronomy. The perspective is thus different from most undergraduate astronomy courses: rather than discussing what is known about the heavens, this text develops the principles of physics so as to illuminate what we see in the heavens. The fundamental principles governing the behaviour of matter and energy are thus used to study the solar system, the structure and evolution of stars, and the early universe. The first part of the book develops Newtonian mechanics towards an understanding of celestial mechanics, while chapters on electromagnetism and elementary quantum theory lay the foundation of the modern theory of the structure of matter and the role of radiation in the constitution of stars. Kinetic theory and nuclear physics provide the basis for a discussion of stellar structure and evolution, and an examination of red shifts and other observational data provide a basis for discussions of cosmology and cosmogony.

Now updated—the leading single-volume introduction to solid state and soft condensed matter physics This Second Edition of the unified treatment of condensed matter physics keeps the best of the first, providing a basic foundation in the subject while addressing many recent discoveries. Comprehensive and authoritative, it consolidates the critical advances of the past fifty years, bringing together an exciting collection of new and classic topics, dozens of new figures, and new experimental data. This updated edition offers a thorough treatment of such basic topics as band theory, transport theory, and semiconductor physics, as well as more modern areas such as quasicrystals, dynamics of phase separation, granular materials, quantum dots, Berry phases, the quantum Hall effect, and Luttinger liquids. In addition to careful study of electron dynamics, electronics, and superconductivity, there is much material drawn from soft matter physics, including liquid crystals, polymers, and fluid dynamics. Provides frequent comparison of theory and experiment, both when they agree and when problems are still unsolved Incorporates many new images from experiments Provides end-of-chapter problems including computational exercises Includes more than fifty data tables and a detailed forty-page index Offers a solutions manual for instructors Featuring 370 figures and more than 1,000 recent and historically significant references, this volume serves as a valuable resource for graduate and undergraduate students in physics, physics professionals, engineers, applied mathematicians, materials scientists, and researchers in other fields who want to learn about the quantum and atomic underpinnings of materials science from a modern point of view.

An Introduction to Complexity Pedagogy: Using Critical Theory, Critical Pedagogy and Complexity in Performance and Literature offers readers an introduction to the basic concepts of complexity science and how they might be applied in the teaching of composition, creative writing, performance, and literature. The book builds on Critical Theory (defined as Frankfurt Theory) and border theory, serving as a critique of neoliberalism in higher education and the teaching of critical thinking as a set of skills. Individual chapters are devoted to the following artists and writers: • the Choctaw people • author LeAnne Howe • Chicana lesbian author Gloria Anzaldua • performance artist Karen Finley • the performance duo Bob Flanagan and Sheree Rose The strength of this book is that it concentrates on the teaching of interrelated topics: borders (including the border between the able/disabled), complexity, mixed ancestry, ability/disability, texts, and performance, using the Mexico-U.S. border as the working example of a complexity system. The work of the five aforementioned artists and authors are used to focus on political resistance within the context of decolonialism, but there are also references to mixed ancestry populations (including Redbones) and disability issues. This complexity frame of reference allows the reader to see and understand both the artists’ narratives and viewpoints in the dynamic relations of shorter and longer time frames. No prior knowledge of complexity science is required and ample examples of complexity-related topics-- from coral reefs to zebra stripes--are provided. The focus is on students in state universities and community college transfer students, especially first generation students and students of color, with policy implications pointing to a critique of both elite small liberal arts colleges (SLACs) and research institutions. An Introduction to Complexity Pedagogy: Using Critical Theory, Critical Pedagogy and Complexity in Performance and Literature is the perfect text for assignment in a variety of classrooms, including courses in Complexity Science, Composition and Rhetoric, Performance Arts, Cultural Studies, Critical Theory, Ethnic Studies, and many others. Perfect for courses such as: Introduction to Creative Writing | Advanced Composition | Introduction to Border Art | Introduction to Complexity in the Arts and the Humanities | Introduction to Multicultural Literature | Introduction to Chicanx and Native American Literature | Introduction to Performance Art and Social Justice | Special Topics: Complexity, the Environment, Literature and the Arts | Special Topics: Disability Studies and Performance | Special Topics: Critical Family Histories, Mixed Ancestry and Pedagogy
