Often neglected in the study of far right organisations, post-communist Europe recently witnessed the rise and fall of a number of populist radical right parties. The Populist Radical Right in Central and Eastern Europe is the first comparative study to focus on the ideology, impact, and electoral performance of this party family in the region. The book advances a series of arguments concerning the context and text of these parties, and systematically analyses the supply-side and demand-side of populist radical right politics. Whilst populist radical right parties in Central and Eastern Europe maintain broad similarities with their West European counterparts, they come across as a distinct phenomenon worthy of study in their own right. Parties like Ataka (Bulgaria), Jobbik (Hungary), and the SNS (Slovakia) resort to historical legacies and contextual idiosyncrasies to frame their ideology; interact with other parties over a number of policy areas; and ultimately compete for public office on the basis of their nativist agenda. The book provides a novel framework for the analysis of different aspects of populist radical right politics, notably enhancing the understanding of this phenomenon by means of primary data such as personal interviews with party leaders and original expert surveys. In Peacemaking from Above, Peace from Below, Norrin M. Ripsman explains how regional rivals make peace and how outside actors can encourage regional peacemaking. Through a qualitative empirical analysis of all the regional rivalries that terminated in peace treaties in the twentieth century—including detailed case studies of the Franco-German, Egyptian-Israeli, and Israeli-Jordanian peace settlements—Ripsman concludes that efforts to encourage peacemaking that focus on changing the attitudes of the rival societies or democratizing the rival polities to enable societal input into security policy are unlikely to achieve peace. Prior to a peace treaty, he finds, peacemaking is driven by states, often against intense societal opposition, for geostrategic reasons or to preserve domestic power. After a formal treaty has been concluded, the stability of peace depends on societal buy-in through mechanisms such as bilateral economic interdependence, democratization of former rivals, cooperative regional institutions, and transfers of population or territory. Society is largely irrelevant to the first stage but is critical to the second. He draws from this analysis a lesson for contemporary policy. Western governments and international organizations have invested heavily in efforts to promote Israeli-Palestinian and Indo-Pakistani peace by promoting democratic values, economic exchanges, and cultural contacts between the opponents. Such attempts to foster peace are likely to waste resources until such time as formal peace treaties are concluded between longtime adversaries.

Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: In this thesis, I will strive to understand how German companies can be successful in post-Communist Bulgaria and why they might want to move their operations to Bulgaria. The central objective of this thesis is to assess the post-Communist business environment for German companies in Bulgaria. Hence, I will closely examine the present legal and economical environment of Bulgaria and will demonstrate the realm of opportunities this country has to offer to Western European entrepreneurs. Indeed the thesis can be presented that: German companies may avoid the disadvantages of globalisation by moving operations to Bulgaria. In order to highlight certain possibilities and achievements I will refer to German companies, which have already successfully built up operations in Bulgaria. One way to successfully analyse a certain industry, country or region is by applying a SWOT analysis. Especially the transition countries in Eastern Europe are interesting to analyse, because the region is faced with many opportunities as well as threats to the changing process. Consequently, reference will be made to the theoretical framework of a SWOT analysis. The SWOT analysis provides a broad overview of the situation of a country and should, therefore, be applied on the transforming countries such as Bulgaria. Further I will also deal with the question of Foreign Direct Investment, its main motives and Bulgarian legal framework. Before I begin to analyse Bulgaria s present economical, social and political situation, however, I believe it is necessary to provide a brief historical overview of the period, which preceded the imposition of communism, along with the performance of the Communist regime and its legacy. This seems especially vital since the Communist period shaped and controlled Bulgarian society for well over 40 years. As Emil Giatzidis states in his book An introduction to post-Communist Bulgaria: Political, economic and social transformation Communist regimes had no civil society since Communist society was totally patronised and controlled by a party that was equivalent to the state. The Oxford Handbook of Local and Regional Democracy in Europe analyses the state of play of democracy at the subnational level in the 27 member states of the EU plus Norway and Switzerland. It places subnational democracy in the context of the distinctive Anglo, the French, the German and Scandinavian state traditions in Europe asking to what extent these are still relevant today. The Handbook adapts Lijphart's theory of democracy and applies it to the subnational levels in all the country chapters. A key theoretical issue is whether subnational (regional and local) democracy is derived from national democracy or whether it is legitimate in its own right. Besides these theoretical concerns it focuses on the practice of democracy: the roles of political parties and interest groups and also how subnational political institutions relate to the ordinary citizen. This can take the form of local referendums or other mechanisms of participation. The Handbook reveals a wide variety of practices across Europe in this regard. Local financial systems also reveal a great variety. Finally, each chapter examines the challenges facing subnational democracy but also the opportunities available to them to enhance their democratic systems. Among the challenges identified are: Europeanization, globalization, but also citizens disaffection and switch-off from politics. Some countries have confronted these challenges more successfully than others but all countries face them. An important aspect of the Handbook is the inclusion of all the countries of East and Central Europe plus Cyprus and Malta, who joined the EU in 2004 and 2007. This is the first time they have been examined alongside the countries of Western Europe from the angle of subnational democracy.
