Penelitian diagnostik merupakan sebuah desain penelitian yang sering dibutuhkan dalam kedokteran dan kesehatan. Metode penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mencari sebuah prosedur pemeriksaan atau metode baru yang dimungkinkan dapat menggantikan prosedur pemeriksaan standar. Prosedur atau metode pemeriksaan yang baru yang diteliti dan dianalisis adalah metode yang diyakini lebih sederhana, lebih praktis, atau lebih murah secara ekonomis sehingga memang dapat dijadikan alternatif dari pemeriksaan standar tersebut. Misalnya untuk menegakkan diagnosis suatu keganasan atau kanker, perlu dilakukan pemeriksaan patologi anatomi atau histopatologi, yang tidak selalu tersedia dan memerlukan waktu yang relatif lama untuk mendapatkan hasilnya. Kemudian dicari pemeriksaan laboratorium yang lebih sederhana yang dapat dilakukan di daerah sebagai skrining awal sebelum pemeriksaan standar dan diagnosis pasti dilakukan. Hasil analisis pemeriksaan baru yang diuji dapat dijadikan alternatif sebagai prosedur pemeriksaan bila mempunyai nilai diagnostik yang baik, termasuk sensitivitas, spesifitas, NPP, NPN, LR+, LR-, dan akurasi. Nilai diagnostik ini didapatkan dengan perhitungan statistik yang dapat dilakukan dengan bantuan berbagai program komputer. Program komputer yang dapat digunakan dalam melakukan analisis penelitian diagnostik antara lain adalah jamovi, SPSS, dan STATA. Inilah yang dijelaskan dalam buku ini, dengan tiga program komputer utama IBM-SPSS®, STATA, dan jamovi. Program SPSS dan STATA adalah program komputer berlisensi berbayar (proprietary) yang untuk penggunaannya yang cukup banyak digunakan oleh para peneliti dan akademisi di Indonesia. Adapun jamovi dikembangkan dengan kode pemrograman terbuka (open source) berbasis bahasa pemrograman R yang kemudian dirilis dengan lisensi publik (GPL) dan dapat digunakan secara bebas dan tidak berbayar. Jamovi tidak hanya free, namun juga mempunyai kemampuan dalam analisis data yang dapat menyamai IBM-SPSS dan STATA dan mempunyai kelebihan pada beberapa sisi.
