A nonneutral plasma is a many-body collection of charged particles in which there is not overall charge neutrality. The diverse areas of application of nonneutral plasmas include: precision atomic clocks, trapping of antimatter plasmas and antihydrogen production, quantum computers, nonlinear vortex dynamics and fundamental transport processes in trapped nonneutral plasmas, strongly-coupled one-component plasmas and Coulomb crystals, coherent radiation generation in free electron devices, such as free electron lasers, magnetrons and cyclotron masers, and intense charged particle beam propagation in periodic focusing accelerators and transport systems, to mention a few examples. This is a graduate-level text - complete with 138 assigned problems and the results from several classic experiments - which covers a broad range of topics related to the fundamental properties of collective processes and nonlinear dynamics of one-component and multispecies charged particle systems in which there is not overall charge neutrality. The theoretical analysis includes the full influence of dc space charge effects on detailed equilibrium, stability and transport properties.

This rigorous explanation of plasmas is relevant to diverse plasma applications such as controlled fusion, astrophysical plasmas, solar physics, magnetospheric plasmas, and plasma thrusters. More thorough than previous texts, it exploits new powerful mathematical techniques to develop deeper insights into plasma behavior. After developing the basic plasma equations from first principles, the book explores single particle motion with particular attention to adiabatic invariance. The author then examines types of plasma waves and the issue of Landau damping. Magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium and stability are tackled with emphasis on the topological concepts of magnetic helicity and self-organization. Advanced topics follow, including magnetic reconnection, nonlinear waves, and the Fokker–Planck treatment of collisions. The book concludes by discussing unconventional plasmas such as non-neutral and dusty plasmas. Written for beginning graduate students and advanced undergraduates, this text emphasizes the fundamental principles that apply across many different contexts.

An intense charged particle beam can be characterized as an organized charged particle flow for which the effects of beam self-fields are of major importance in describing the evolution of the flow. Research employing such beams is now a rapidly growing field with important applications ranging from the development of high power sources of coherent radiation to inertial confinement fusion. Major programs have now been established at several laboratories in the United States and Great Britain, as well as in the USSR, Japan, and several Eastern and Western European nations. In addition, related research activities are being pursued at the graduate level at several universities in the US and abroad. When the author first entered this field in 1973 there was no single reference text that provided a broad survey of the important topics, yet contained sufficient detail to be of interest to the active researcher. That situation has persisted, and this book is an attempt to fill the void. As such, the text is aimed at the graduate student, or beginning researcher; however, it contains ample information to be a convenient reference source for the advanced worker.

Plasma physics may hold the key to a virtually inexhaustible future energy source through the control of thermonuclear reactions. The complexity of plasma physics makes it a difficult subject to write about in popular terms, but the authors of The Fourth State of Matter: An Introduction to Plasma Science, Second Edition treat plasma in a comprehens

This workshop was the first one in this series held since the announcement of the formation of cold anti-hydrogen by the ATHENA and ATRAP experiments. Research presented includes transport, collective modes, and the interplay between the two from both a particle and fluid perspective. This work is carried out in different geometries including cylindrical traps and toroidal systems. Research on cold anti-hydrogen is also represented, since accumulation of large numbers of antiprotons and positrons is a necessary precursor to recombination. Finally, several papers describing experiments on the physics of beams widens the scope to include beams and accelerators. The Workshop on Non-Neutral Plasma Physics brings together investigators from diverse areas whose research has the common feature of involving plasmas that have constituent particles with the same sign of charge.

This is a graduate-level text - complete with 75 assigned problems - which covers a broad range of topics related to the fundamental properties of collective processes and nonlinear dynamics of intense charged particle beams in periodic focusing accelerators and transport systems. The subject matter is treated systematically from first principles, using a unified theoretical approach, and the emphasis is on the development of basic concepts that illustrate the underlying physical processes in circumstances where intense self fields play a major role in determining the evolution of the system. The theoretical analysis includes the full influence of dc space charge and intense self-field effects on detailed equilibrium, stability and transport properties, and is valid over a wide range of system parameters ranging from moderate-intensity, moderate-emittance beams to very-high-intensity, low-emittance beams. The statistical models used to describe the properties of intense charged particle beams are based on the Vlasov-Maxwell equations, the macroscopic fluid-Maxwell equations, or the Klimontovich-Maxwell equations, as appropriate.

The Traveling Wave Tubes (TWT) is a powerful vacuum electronic device used to amplify radio-frequency (RF) signals as well as numerous applications such as radar, television and telephone satellite communications. This monograph is devoted to the author's original theoretical developments in the theory of a traveling wave tube (TWT).Most of the monograph is the author's original work on an analytical theory of TWTs. It is a constructive Lagrangian field theory of TWT in which the electron beam (e-beam) is represented by one-dimensional multi-stream electron flow and the guiding slow-wave structure is represented by possibly non-uniform multi-transmission line (MTL). The proposed analytic theory accounts for a number of electron plasma phenomena including space-charge effects such as electron-to-electron repulsion (debunching), convective instabilities, wave-particle interaction, amplifying waves and more. It allows, in particular, to (i) identify origins of the wave-particle interaction and the system convective instability (exponential growth); (ii) evaluate the energy transfer rate from the e-beam to the electromagnetic radiation; (iii) identify instability modal branches which under condition of sufficiently strong coupling between the e-beam and the MTL can cover ideally all frequencies.
