In,1872, Boltzmann published a paper which for the first time provided a precise mathematical basis for a discussion of the approach to equilibrium. The paper dealt with the approach to equilibrium of a dilute gas and was based on an equation - the Boltzmann equation, as we call it now - for the velocity distribution function of such ~ gas. The Boltzmann equation still forms the basis of the kinetic theory of gases and has proved fruitful not only for the classical gases Boltzmann had in mind, but als- if properly generalized - for the electron gas in a solid and the excitation gas in a superfluid. Therefore it was felt by many of us that the Boltzmann equation was of sufficient interest, even today, to warrant a meeting, in which a review of its present status would be undertaken. Since Boltzmann had spent a good part of his life in Vienna, this city seemed to be a natural setting for such a meeting. The first day was devoted to historical lectures, since it was generally felt that apart from their general interest, they would furnish a good introduction to the subsequent scientific sessions. We are very much indebted to Dr. D.

This brief book introduces the Poisson-Boltzmann equation in three chapters that build upon one another, offering a systematic entry to advanced students and researchers. Chapter one formulates the equation and develops the linearized version of Debye-Hückel theory as well as exact solutions to the nonlinear equation in simple geometries and generalizations to higher-order equations. Chapter two introduces the statistical physics approach to the Poisson-Boltzmann equation. It allows the treatment of fluctuation effects, treated in the loop expansion, and in a variational approach. First applications are treated in detail: the problem of the surface tension under the addition of salt, a classic problem discussed by Onsager and Samaras in the 1930s, which is developed in modern terms within the loop expansion, and the adsorption of a charged polymer on a like-charged surface within the variational approach. Chapter three finally discusses the extension of Poisson-Boltzmann theory to explicit solvent. This is done in two ways: on the phenomenological level of nonlocal electrostatics and with a statistical physics model that treats the solvent molecules as molecular dipoles. This model is then treated in the mean-field approximation and with the variational method introduced in Chapter two, rounding up the development of the mathematical approaches of Poisson-Boltzmann theory. After studying this book, a graduate student will be able to access the research literature on the Poisson-Boltzmann equation with a solid background.

The aim of this book is to present the theory and applications of the relativistic Boltzmann equation in a self-contained manner, even for those readers who have no familiarity with special and general relativity. Though an attempt is made to present the basic concepts in a complete fashion, the style of presentation is chosen to be appealing to readers who want to understand how kinetic theory is used for explicit calculations. The book will be helpful not only as a textbook for an advanced course on relativistic kinetic theory but also as a reference for physicists, astrophysicists and applied mathematicians who are interested in the theory and applications of the relativistic Boltzmann equation.

Schrödinger Equations and Diffusion Theory addresses the question “What is the Schrödinger equation?” in terms of diffusion processes, and shows that the Schrödinger equation and diffusion equations in duality are equivalent. In turn, Schrödinger’s conjecture of 1931 is solved. The theory of diffusion processes for the Schrödinger equation tells us that we must go further into the theory of systems of (infinitely) many interacting quantum (diffusion) particles. The method of relative entropy and the theory of transformations enable us to construct severely singular diffusion processes which appear to be equivalent to Schrödinger equations. The theory of large deviations and the propagation of chaos of interacting diffusion particles reveal the statistical mechanical nature of the Schrödinger equation, namely, quantum mechanics. The text is practically self-contained and requires only an elementary knowledge of probability theory at the graduate level. --- This book is a self-contained, very well-organized monograph recommended to researchers and graduate students in the field of probability theory, functional analysis and quantum dynamics. (...) what is written in this book may be regarded as an introduction to the theory of diffusion processes and applications written with the physicists in mind. Interesting topics present themselves as the chapters proceed. (...) this book is an excellent addition to the literature of mathematical sciences with a flavour different from an ordinary textbook in probability theory because of the author’s great contributions in this direction. Readers will certainly enjoy the topics and appreciate the profound mathematical properties of diffusion processes. (Mathematical Reviews)
