This study guide aims at explaining theoretical concepts encountered by practitioners applying theory to molecular science. This is a collection of short chapters, a manual, attempting to walk the reader through two types of topics: (i) those that are usually covered by standard texts but are difficult to grasp and (ii) topics not usually covered, but are essential for successful theoretical research. The main focus is on the latter. The philosophy of this book is not to cover a complete theory, but instead to provide a set of simple study cases helping to illustrate main concepts. The focus is on simplicity. Each section is made deliberately short, to enable the reader to easily grasp the contents. Sections are collated in themed chapters, and the advantage is that each section can be studied separately, as an introduction to more in-depth studies. Topics covered are related to elasticity, electrostatics, molecular dynamics and molecular spectroscopy, which form the foundation for many presently active research areas such as molecular biophysics and soft matter physics. The notes provide a uniform approach to all these areas, helping the reader to grasp the basic concepts from a common set of theoretical tools.

This is the fourth edition of the successful textbook on computational chemistry which continues to provide a comprehensive introduction to the theory and practice of computational chemistry. Notable updates include a review of references up to mid-2023, encompassing recent developments in scientific journals, books, and software. The evolving prominence of density functional theory (DFT) is emphasized, and attention is given to the increasing application of artificial intelligence in computational chemistry. The book maintains key features from the previous edition, delving into the mathematical intricacies of ab initio and density functional methods at an introductory level. Clear explanations of matrix methods are provided, offering a direct approach to obtaining energy levels and molecular orbitals. Additionally, each chapter includes sets of "Easier" and "Harder" drill questions, with suggested answers at the end of the book, enhancing the learning experience. The book is intended for upper-year undergraduate and graduate students studying computational and theoretical chemistry and for self-study by researchers in universities and industry to whom computational chemistry may be useful.

This corrected second edition contains new material which includes solvent effects, the treatment of singlet diradicals, and the fundamentals of computaional chemistry. "Computational Chemistry: Introduction to the Theory and Applications of Molecular and Quantum Mechanics" is an invaluable tool for teaching and researchers alike. The book provides an overview of the field, explains the basic underlying theory at a meaningful level that is not beyond beginners, and it gives numerous comparisons of different methods with one another and with experiment. The following concepts are illustrated and their possibilities and limitations are given: - potential energy surfaces; - simple and extended Hueckel methods; - ab initio, AM1 and related semiempirical methods; - density functional theory (DFT). Topics are placed in a historical context, adding interest to them and removing much of their apparently arbitrary aspect. The large number of references, to all significant topics mentioned, should make this book useful not only to undergraduates but also to graduate students and academic and industrial researchers.

Concepts and Methods in Modern Theoretical Chemistry: Statistical Mechanics, the second book in a two-volume set, focuses on the dynamics of systems and phenomena. A new addition to the series Atoms, Molecules, and Clusters, this book offers chapters written by experts in their fields. It enables readers to learn how concepts from ab initio quantum chemistry and density functional theory (DFT) can be used to describe, understand, and predict chemical dynamics. This book covers a wide range of subjects, including discussions on the following topics: Time-dependent DFT Quantum fluid dynamics (QFD) Photodynamic control, nonlinear dynamics, and quantum hydrodynamics Molecules in a laser field, charge carrier mobility, and excitation energy transfer Mechanisms of chemical reactions Nucleation, quantum Brownian motion, and the third law of thermodynamics Transport properties of binary mixtures Although most of the chapters are written at a level that is accessible to a senior graduate student, experienced researchers will also find interesting new insights in these experts’ perspectives. This book provides an invaluable resource toward understanding the whole gamut of atoms, molecules, and clusters.

Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 90 years The Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.
