This textbook introduces variational calculus and regularization methods for inverse problems, seamlessly blending classical concepts with contemporary computational applications, particularly in the field of image processing. The classical perspective draws upon foundational topics explored by pioneers such as Euler and Lagrange, establishing a solid theoretical groundwork. In recent decades, the advent of disciplines such as computer vision has expanded the horizons of variational calculus, showcasing its effectiveness in addressing complex problems that necessitate computational solutions. Consequently, this book places a strong emphasis on the synergy between mathematical theory, practical applications, and algorithmic development. To ensure the text is comprehensive and accessible, essential principles of functional analysis and Fourier analysis are incorporated, facilitating a deeper and more nuanced understanding of the applications presented. Covering both classic and more recent aspects of variational calculus, this book suggests that many topics of modern technology such as computer vision, robotics and especially digital image processing can be formulated in terms of variational problems.

Vujanovic and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book is devoted to the basic variational principles of mechanics: the Lagrange-D'Alembert differential variational principle and the Hamilton integral variational principle. These two variational principles form the main subject of contemporary analytical mechanics, and from them the whole colossal corpus of classical dynamics can be deductively derived as a part of physical theory. In recent years students and researchers of engineering and physics have begun to realize the utility of variational principles and the vast possi bilities that they offer, and have applied them as a powerful tool for the study of linear and nonlinear problems in conservative and nonconservative dynamical systems. The present book has evolved from a series of lectures to graduate stu dents and researchers in engineering given by the authors at the Depart ment of Mechanics at the University of Novi Sad Serbia, and numerous foreign universities. The objective of the authors has been to acquaint the reader with the wide possibilities to apply variational principles in numerous problems of contemporary analytical mechanics, for example, the Noether theory for finding conservation laws of conservative and nonconservative dynamical systems, application of the Hamilton-Jacobi method and the field method suitable for nonconservative dynamical systems, the variational approach to the modern optimal control theory, the application of variational methods to stability and determining the optimal shape in the elastic rod theory, among others.

Introductory Finite Element Method written by Chandrakant S. Desai and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-12-19 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Although there are many books on the finite element method (FEM) on the market, very few present its basic formulation in a simple, unified manner. Furthermore, many of the available texts address either only structure-related problems or only fluid or heat-flow problems, and those that explore both do so at an advanced level. Introductory Finite Element Method examines both structural analysis and flow (heat and fluid) applications in a presentation specifically designed for upper-level undergraduate and beginning graduate students, both within and outside of the engineering disciplines. It includes a chapter on variational calculus, clearly presented to show how the functionals for structural analysis and flow problems are formulated. The authors provide both one- and two-dimensional finite element codes and a wide range of examples and exercises. The exercises include some simpler ones to solve by hand calculation-this allows readers to understand the theory and assimilate the details of the steps in formulating computer implementations of the method. Anyone interested in learning to solve boundary value problems numerically deserves a straightforward and practical introduction to the powerful FEM. Its clear, simplified presentation and attention to both flow and structural problems make Introductory Finite Element Method the ideal gateway to using the FEM in a variety of applications.

This book is about the calculus of variations which is a subject concerned mainly with optimization of functionals. However, because part of it is based on using ordinary calculus in solving optimization problems, "Calculus of Variations" in its original title is modified to become “Mathematics of Variation”. In fact, the book is essentially a collection of solved problems with rather modest theoretical background and hence it is based on the method of "learning by example and practice" which in our view is the most effective way for learning mathematics and overcoming its difficulties. The main merit of the book is its clarity, intuitive structure and rather inclusiveness as it includes the main topics and applications of this subject. The materials in this book require decent background in general mathematics (mostly in single-variable and multi-variable differential and integral calculus). The book can be used as a text or as a reference for an introductory course on this subject as part of an undergraduate curriculum in physics or engineering or applied mathematics. The book can also be used as a source of supplementary pedagogical materials used in tutorial sessions associated with such a course.

Lorentz Geometry is a very important intersection between Mathematics and Physics, being the mathematical language of General Relativity. Learning this type of geometry is the first step in properly understanding questions regarding the structure of the universe, such as: What is the shape of the universe? What is a spacetime? What is the relation between gravity and curvature? Why exactly is time treated in a different manner than other spatial dimensions? Introduction to Lorentz Geometry: Curves and Surfaces intends to provide the reader with the minimum mathematical background needed to pursue these very interesting questions, by presenting the classical theory of curves and surfaces in both Euclidean and Lorentzian ambient spaces simultaneously. Features: Over 300 exercises Suitable for senior undergraduates and graduates studying Mathematics and Physics Written in an accessible style without loss of precision or mathematical rigor Solution manual available on www.routledge.com/9780367468644
