Bursting with comical anecdotes and witty observations, blended with occasional moments of exquisite sadness, this is a delightful true story of an English couple searching for a new life in the quiet solitude of rural Ireland."Marley and Me" meets "Around Ireland with a Fridge." A wise old Irish woman, a homeless Irish wolfhound pup and a lonely little girl with green eyes and brown hair take on the world in this tale of love between a special-needs dog named Chance and the little girl who is willing to give up everything to save him. Day after day C.J. sits on the rock cut in front of the pale yellow house with green trim at the edge of the great forest watching the cars go by. As she sits, she dreams of finding a special someone of her own so she won't have to play alone. One day a circus truck pulling a prancing-pony carousel passes by the lonely little girl sitting on the rock cut. With the pure hearted resolve known only to the very young or truly aged, C.J. casts her wish for someone special into the heart of the prancing pony carousel. Then she waits. Her Nana Jean in far off Ireland tells C.J. the only way such dreams come true is to believe with all your heart in the things the human eye can not see. And so she does. One night in the midst of a whirling snow storm, a homeless Irish wolfhound pup ends up at the door of the pale yellow house with green trim at the edge of the great forest and two hearts entwine to beat as one. As events unfold, C.J.'s parents can not see the love between these two friends is meant to be. So, C.J. and Chance, with the help of Nana Jean, a kindly vet, and a man with a wooden leg, must fight for the right to stay together in a world that has forgotten how to have the heart to simply 'Believe'.

Rat. Dope. Booze. Gun moll. Shakedown. The popularity of these terms in American English is due, in part, to an obscure Boston lawyer who, perhaps as a lark, published a slim dictionary of criminal slang in 1908. Joesph M. Sullivan's limited published output plays an important role in American criminal slang. His terms and definitions are widely cited in dictionaries, scholarly papers, and the popular media. This book presents the contents of Sullivan's "Criminal Slang: A Dictionary of the Vernacular of the Under World" as first published by the Detective Pub. Co. in 1908. The original content been extensively annotated to include considerable new information Sullivan presented in two additional publications, as well as to clarify ambiguity in Sullivan's original texts. All of Sullivan's slang terms and definitions are, for the first time, presented here in a single authoritative, alphabetized listing. An introduction puts Sullivan's work into historical context, along with a bibliography of American criminal slang dictionaries and glossaries from 1859-1918. A series of original illustrations demonstrates Sullivan's skill in choosing words for his dictionary by charting the growth the growth for several of his terms from 1860 to the present.

Irish Crime Fiction written by Brian Cliff and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-04-19 with Literary Criticism categories.

This book examines the recent expansion of Ireland's literary tradition to include home-grown crime fiction. It surveys the wave of books that use genre structures to explore specifically Irish issues such as the Troubles and the rise and fall of the Celtic Tiger, as well as Irish experiences of human trafficking, the supernatural, abortion, and civic corruption. These novels are as likely to address the national regulation of sexuality through institutions like the Magdalen Laundries as they are to follow serial killers through the American South or to trace international corporate conspiracies. This study includes chapters on Northern Irish crime fiction, novels set in the Republic, women protagonists, and transnational themes, and discusses Irish authors’ adaptations of a well-loved genre and their effect on assumptions about the nature of Irish literature. It is a book for readers of crime fiction and Irish literature alike, illuminating the fertile intersections of the two.
