El periodo comprendido entre los años 1965 y 2000 coincide con un importante desarrollo en España de los montajes teatrales basados en textos clásicos. Atrás quedaron los prejuicios contra el tradicionalismo y las presuntamente inapelables posturas ideológicas de cuño reaccionario y medievalizante de nuestros mejores dramaturgos de la época del Barroco. El presente trabajo tiene como principal finalidad poner de relieve el mérito de versionistas, directores y escenógrafos de este periodo (que no ha terminado, afortunadamente, en la mágica cifra de tres ceros). Un mérito que radica en haber sabido sacar a la luz y poner ante el espectador el dinamismo, la gracia, la compleja sentimentalidad de unas piezas que fueron concebidas para divertir y, cuando menos, para contemplar desde la perspectiva del humor algunos conceptos y axiomas de la época comúnmente aceptados. Precisamente, La dama duende es una de las muchas comedias de capa y espada que, con el sello inconfundible de Calderón de la Barca, lleva al límite las posibilidades cómicas de temas tan importantes como el del 'honor', el de la sumisión de la mujer o el de la creencia o no en espíritus de ultratumba. Con este telón de fondo, la presente tesis es un análisis contrastivo y en profundidad de seis montajes llevados a cabo en el periodo mencionado anteriormente. El método de trabajo se inscribe en las coordenadas de la semiótica teatral, puesto que lo que interesaba destacar desde un primer momento era comparar las distintas maneras de montar un mismo texto dramático. Por esta razón el grueso del estudio es la descripción pormenorizada de escenarios, vestuarios, sistemas de luces, decorados, distribuciones proxémicas, marcas gestuales y, en fin, de todos aquellos elementos plásticos y visuales que caracterizan cada una de las aproximaciones al texto originario. A la vez, se presta la atención que corresponde a las versiones textuales: “peinados”, acortamientos, añadidos o dislocaciones que nos aportan información también de la intención que cada director de escena ha querido materializar. Es así como se puede llegar a deducir, con cierta seguridad, que también en el teatro clásico las necesarias adaptaciones han necesitado de los mismos recursos escenográficos que en otro tipo de montajes. En otro orden de cosas, que hay un público, cada vez más numeroso, que demanda esta clase de teatro. Conclusiones entre las que también habría que incluir que, tras la pertinente comparación de todos los planos del texto literario y dramático, los versionistas y directores han reproducido en sus distintas maneras de concebir a los personajes calderonianos los distintos roles del hombre y de la mujer actuales: una dama -Ángela- que quiere ser libre y toma la iniciativa en la seducción, frente a un galán -Manuel- que se deja llevar y a punto está de confundir a su dama con un duende.
