In Abby's world, magic isn't anything special: it's a part of everyday life. So when Abby is discovered to have zero magical abilities, she's branded an Ord-ordinary, bad luck, and quite possibly a danger to society. The outlook for an ord isn't bright. Many are cast out by their families, while others are sold to treasure hunters (ords are impervious to spells and enchantments) Luckily for Abby, her family enrolls her in a special school for kids who must learn how to get around in the world without magic. But with kidnappers and carnivorous goblins lurking around every corner, Abby's biggest problem may not be what she's going to do with her life - it's whether she's going to survive the school year.

In ORDINARY MAGIC Jack Daly, atheist and movie 'special effects' expert, creates holograms of Jesus and famous saints to preach the Sunday sermon at Holy Redeemer Church in a last ditch effort to keep the poor parish out of bankruptcy. Tickets to the service cost up $250 each. His uncle, Fr. Frank Shymanski, the pastor, is tormented over this as he believes they are committing a sacrilege against God and will be severely punished for it. Bizarre murders soon take place. A policeman is levitated to his death in the church. An altar boy is mortally torched by a blast of psychokinetic energy. A beautiful woman is strangled in a Black Mass ritual at a synagogue by a killer who can be in two places at the same time. Rabbi Ari Zabel, a student of Kabbalah, is asked by the NYPD to consult on the strange case as the killer seemingly has mystical powers similar to those possessed by certain prophets in the Bible. The evidence points to a Demon as the likely culprit. In a climactic confrontation at St. Patrick's Cathedral, the killer's formidable powers are pitted against Jack's 'special effects' movie magic and the sparks fly.

Everyday Magic written by Laurie Ricou and has been published by UBC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-11-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

Child language is a subject in which everyone is an expert. All parents study their children's language carefully, if undeliberately, and every family has its precious memories of the unique verbal improvisations of childhood. For writers who continually struggle with and revel in the mysteries of language, the language of children holds a special attraction. Everyday Magic looks at the way Canadian writers have written through, as distinct from for or about, children, at the ways they have used 'child language' and children's models of perception to achieve various literary effects. It describes how texts might be shaped by child usage and speculates that adult artists often find themselves surprised and informed by the child language they seek to create. Ricou examines how the distinctive features of child language described by psycholinguists intersect with the written languages used by writers to suggest, not only a child language, but also the way a child sees and organizes an understanding of the world. The book's subtitle, putting the term 'child language' into the plural, points out that not one, but many written interpretations of the child's perspectives are possible. In order to emphasize this plurality and indicate that there are any number of child languages, the author has organized his study as a series of closely related essays. Each chapter considers the work of a Canadian author or authors, with the book as a whole moving from the more conventional writers to those who step outside the bounds of convention. Ricou proposes analogies with Wordsworth and Dylan Thomas, Proust and Dickens, but he finds his principal subject in the inherent interest of, for example, the Piagetian scheme that W.O. Mitchell seems to adopt in Who Has Seen the Wind; the obsessions with similes in Ernest Buckler; the variations on the Bildungsroman in Margaret Laurence and Alice Munro; and the persistent experiments with presymbolic language in bill bissett. For these and other writers such as Clark Blaise, Emily Carr, Dennis Lee, Dorothy Livesay, P.K. Page, James Reaney, and Miriam Waddington, Ricou illuminates the particular literary languages appropriate to each author's subject. The result is a fascinating and unique approach to Canadian literature.

Spellbinding meditations on conjuring your own bliss. Everyday Enchantments is a love letter to the magic of everyday life, the sweet moments and the profound that we often overlook in our hurry to get from one place to the next. This collection of essays reminds us to escape into the ordinary, find beauty in a simple cup of tea or rereading a beloved novel and joyfully let our world turn upside down when synchronicity strikes in the form of wrong turns down forgotten lanes and unexpected midnight conversations with the moon. Everyday Enchantments is a study in what it means to live deliciously, joyfully, and magically. And it's an invitation to conjure your own bliss, because, let's face it, we could all use a little more magic in our lives.
