Excerpt from An University Text-Book of Botany Continuous change is necessary in order that the material universe may remain in its present condition. Since the amount of matter is constant, it follows that the particles Of matter must be capable Of dissociation and recombination, otherwise, sooner or later, a stable condition is reached which is incompatible with the existence of life. Living organisms, plants and animals, are the most important agents upon the earth in this redistribution of matter. The inert, inorganic substances are decomposed through the activity of living organisms, the components being united with others into the innumerable com pounds of which living substances are composed. The organic com pounds in turn undergo repeated changes Within the organism, which may itself serve as food for others. The simpler compounds result ing from the chemical changes within the organism may remain inert, like the masses of limestone developed from the skeletons of coral polyps, or the fiinty deposits left by the accumulated Shells of Diatoms; or, like carbon-dioxide, they may again be utilized as food for plants. It is the province of biology, in its broadest sense, to study the part played by plants and animals in the economy of nature - their relation to each other and to the inorganic world. Excerpt from A Textbook of Botany for Colleges Thus the science of Botany has a scope far too vast, and a body of knowledge much too great, for any one mind to grasp. Therefore it has become subdivided for purposes of exact investigation. From this point of View, all Botany falls into four divisions, and they into subdivisions, as follows. Excerpt from A College Text-Book of Botany: Being an Enlargement of the Author's "Elementary Botany" Part I. Physiology. This deals with the life processes of plants, as absorption, transpiration, conduction, photosynthesis, nutrition, assimilation, digestion, respiration, growth, and irritability. Since protoplasm is fundamental to all the life work of the plant, this subject is dealt with first, and the student is led through the study of, and experimentation with, the simpler as well as some of the higher plants, to a general understanding of protoplasm and the special way in which it enables the plant to carry on its work and to adjust itself to the conditions of its existence. This study also serves the purpose of familiarizing the pupil with some of the lower and unfamiliar plants. Excerpt from Outlines of the History of Botany The following brief sketch of the history of botany makes no claim to originality save in the mode of presentation of the subject-matter. It comprises the substance of a course Of lectures given to students Of the University of Liverpool during their third year Of residence, and has for its object the discussion of the more important features in the advance of botanical knowledge from the earliest times down to, approximately, the present day. The ordinary university student, in the course of an already overcrowded curriculum, has only the minimum of time to devote to the study of the history of the science, and not always the knowledge or experience requisite to form a proper estimate of the relative values of the results achieved by the numberless investigators whose names appear on the pages of the larger text-books, still less to picture for himself in correct perspective, the evolution of the science as a whole. These lectures, it is hoped, may in some measure aid him in attaining these ends, so far as the history of botany is concerned. Much has been omitted that another writer might have included exigencies of time and space must serve as excuse for such omissions. Some aspects Of the subject have been expanded, not unduly it is hoped, that others might prefer to treat more briefly or to omit altogether. Excerpt from Text-Book of Botany, Morphological and Physiological In the notes the citations of authorities have been somewhat increased. It has also seemed desirable sometimesto depart from the author's rule ot'passing over authorities whose interest is now chiefly historical. References have been given to English and French translations of many of the papers and memoirs quoted, as these are at any rate often more accessible in this country than the originals. Excerpt from General Botany: An Introductory Text for Colleges and Advanced Classes in Secondary Schools The first step in developing the course was the arranging Of laboratory and field work. The second was the working out Of the classroom discussions SO that the class work and the actual work with the plant materials would run parallel and supple ment each other. The laboratory directions have been used and revised at intervals during the past five years, and the textbook has been tested and revised and used in mimeographed form for the past two years. During this period the work has been pre sented to upward Of three thousand students and the course has been improved in every detail through the experience and con structive criticisms Of the eight instructors who have tried out various methods and devices and different arrangements Of the material with their classes at The Ohio State University. Suggestions and ideas for guidance in the selection Of subject matter have been derived from four sources. The first of these is the traditional course in general botany. This embodies the facts and principles which most botanists agree are essential for a foundation in the subject, and these are to be retained unless there is definite reason why they Should be set aside. The second source from which suggestions as to subject matter have come is the large body Of men engaged in the teaching or practice Of horticulture, agriculture, and forestry. These workers in the applied fields Of botany are the men who more than any others use information concerning plants, and certainly a course in general botany Should afford a foundation for their courses and their practice. A third source Of suggestions and criticism is the students to whom the course has been given. The questions they have asked.
