Anaerobic digestion (AD) is one of the oldest biotechnological processes and originally referred to biomass degradation under anoxic conditions in both natural and engineered systems. It has been used for decades to treat various waste streams and to produce methane-rich biogas as an important energy carrier, and it has become a major player in electrical power production. AD is a popular, mature technology, and our knowledge about the influencing process parameters as well as about the diverse microbial communities involved in the process has increased dramatically over the last few decades. To avoid competition with food and feed production, the AD feedstock spectrum has constantly been extended to waste products either rich in recalcitrant lignocellulose or containing inhibitory substances such as ammonia, which requires application of various pre-treatments or specific management of the microbial resources. Extending the definition of AD, it can also convert gases rich in hydrogen and carbon dioxide into methane that can substitute natural gas, which opens new opportunities by a direct link to traditional petrochemistry. Furthermore, AD can be coupled with emerging biotechnological applications, such as microbial electrochemical technologies or the production of medium-chain fatty acids by anaerobic fermentation. Ultimately, because of the wide range of applications, AD is still a very vital field in science. This Special Issue highlights some key topics of this research field.

Environmental protection and resource recovery are two crucial issues facing our society in the 21st century. Anaerobic biotechnology has become widely accepted by the wastewater industry as the better alternative to the more conventional but costly aerobic process and tens of thousands of full-scale facilities using this technology have been installed worldwide in the past two decades. Anaerobic Biotechnology is the sequel to the well-received Environmental Anaerobic Technology: Applications and New Developments (2010) and compiles developments over the past five years. This volume contains contributions from 48 renowned experts from across the world, including Gatze Lettinga, laureate of the 2007 Tyler Prize and the 2009 Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize, and Perry McCarty, whose pioneering work laid the foundations for today's anaerobic biotechnology. This book is ideal for engineers and scientists working in the field, as well as decision-makers on energy and environmental policies. Over the last decade the Latin American Workshop and Seminar on Anaerobic Digestion has become not only the premier regional forum for discussion, integration and exchange of experience among professionals active in this field, but has acquired a wider reputation. Not only does it contribute significantly to the diffusion of anaerobic technologies and processes in Latin America, but it provides a forum for the work of the world's experts in anaerobic digestion. From the many contributions to the 6th workshop and seminar 41 papers of high quality have been selected. They range over the following topics: traditional and innovative configuration of anaerobic reactors; experience with pilot- and full-scale anaerobic treatment of domestic and industrial wastewater; anaerobic digestion of solid waste; anaerobic degradation of recalcitrant compounds; anaerobic biofilm and granular sludge; pretreatment of anaerobic effluents and integration of anaerobic-aerobic processes; and operation and control of anaerobic reactors.
