El libro Anales del Convento de Santa Cruz de la Popa de la Galera de Cartagena de Indias, que presentamos a usted amigo lector, recoge y registra en orden cronológico, los más importantes acontecimientos ocurridos durante los cuatro siglos de ocupación de los Agustinos Recoletos en el Convento, mediante la reproducción de su cuaderno de bitácora, que incluye: los conflictos entre Agustinos Calzados y Agustinos Descalzos o Recoletos y sus consecuencias; su conquista; su saqueo y destrucción, el cual fue llevado a cabo por los piratas Barón de Pointis y Almirante Vernon; su vinculación con Simón Bolívar, quien instaló su cuartel general en el Convento, en su marcha de conquista hacia la ciudad de Santa Marta en Colombia, hasta su partida a Jamaica; su papel en las guerras de independencia; el destierro de sus religiosos, la incautación de los bienes monásticos y la supresión de la comunidad por las leyes persecutorias de 1821; los diversos intentos de restauración, la entrega de sus ruinas a los Agustinos Recoletos en 1961 y el regreso de los mismos en 1967; su restauración, de la cual fue gran gestor José Rada Arina (Q.E.P.D.); su dimensión turística, entre otros, hasta la instalación de la Comunidad Agustino Recoleta en 1989, hechos de los cuales hemos recopilado bastante material. Esperamos que este libro sea de su agrado, y le invitamos a que lo lea, ya que es el resultado de varios años de investigación y escritura, y una deuda para con mi padre.
