Les villes de l'Imerina (hautes terres centrales) sont le théâtre d'une querelle permanente entre ce qui est pensé comme moderne et le traditionalisme. La diversité du comportement est telle que des Malgaches originaires de la région ne se reconnaîtront pas dans certains passages de cet ouvrage, d'autres y verront un miroir déformant de la réalité, alors que d'autres encore y entreverront leur profil ou s'y découvriront... C'est, entre autres causes, cette pluralité de comportements qui rend délicates les interventions des techniciens sociaux quand il s'agit de mettre au point une tactique de lutte contre les infections sexuellement transmissibles. Certains Malgaches sont plus perméables aux mesures modernes ou chrétiennes préconisées par les autorités publiques, tandis que d'autres, souvent pour une raison culturelle, résistent. Successivement, technicien supérieur de recherche au Centre national de recherche de Tsimbazaza (CNRT, Tananarive, 1976-1982), enseignant d'anthropologie sociale et culturelle à l'Ecole normale supérieure de Tananarive (1981-1992) puis à l'Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales (Paris, depuis 1992), Malanjaona Rakotomala est l'auteur de nombreux articles et interventions sur divers sujets concernant la société et la culture malgaches : médecine traditionnelle et conception de la maladie, traditions orales, religions, religions, genre, relation entre savoir et pouvoir, sorcellerie...
