Brain-Machine Interfaces are aimed at providing a new communication channel to link the human brain to external world without using the usual nervous and muscular pathways. The achievement of such devices is at the conjunction of signal processing, machine learning and neurophysiology. In this thesis, we achieved and studied a non invasive Brain Machine Interface. This system is asynchronous: the user communicates trough self-paced imagined motor or cognitive tasks which are not triggered by an external stimulation system. It is based on the real time analysis of electroencephalographic recordings from scalp electrodes in a human subject. From a methodological point of view, several preprocessing of these signals have been implemented and their impacts on the efficiency of communication have been compared. These methods include: 1) direct processing of the signal from EEG sensors, 2) blind source separation algorithms, 3) reconstruction of cortical sources activities with inverse problem solving. Moreover, several measures are exploited and compared to quantify cerebral activity: spectral power, coherence and phase synchrony. Our results show that a using a previous source reconstruction of cortical activity through inverse problem and computing long distance interaction measures improve the performance of the device.

Les Interfaces Cerveau-Machines (ICMs) visent à établir un moyen de communication direct entre le cerveau humain et un système électronique. Si d'importantes avancées ont d'ores et déjà été réalisées depuis une vingtaine d'années dans le domaine, les systèmes existants s'avèrent lents et fastidieux, imposant aux utilisateurs le moment auquel ils doivent envoyer leur commande (systèmes synchrones). Nos travaux se sont concentrés sur le développement de systèmes asynchrones basés sur l'électroencéphalographie (EEG) : ce n'est pas l'ordinateur qui impose le moment de réalisation de la tâche mentale mais le sujet qui a la possibilité d'envoyer sa commande lorsque qu'il le désire. Ceci impose que le système soit capable d'analyser en temps réel l'activité cérébrale du sujet et de reconnaître la tâche mentale recherchée parmi les activités cérébrales mesurées. Nos travaux proposent des méthodes pour les problématiques suivantes : 1. permettre à l'utilisateur d'envoyer sa commande lorsqu'il le désire ; 2. augmenter les capacités du système à reconnaître correctement une tâche mentale ; 3. rendre le système robuste à certains changements qui peuvent s'opérer lors de l'utilisation du système, i.e., adapter le système aux possibles changements du sujet dans la manière dont celui-ci accomplit sa tâche mentale. Les méthodes proposées utilisent de manière conjointe les caractéristiques spatiales (zones cérébrales impliquées), fréquentielles (bandes de fréquences) et temporelles (succession des activations) des tâches mentales afin de pallier le faible rapport signal sur interférences. Différents jeux de données sont utilisés afin de valider ces approches.

Neurophysiologists are often accused by colleagues in the physical sci ences of designing experiments without any underlying hypothesis. This impression is attributable to the ease of getting lost in the ever-increasing sea of professional publications which do not state explicitly the ultimate goal of the research. On the other hand, many of the explicit models for brain function in the past were so far removed from experimental reality that they had very little impact on further research. It seems that one needs much intimate experience with the real nerv-. ous system before a reasonable model can be suggested. It would have been impossible for Copernicus to suggest his model of the solar system without the detailed observations and tabulations of star and planet motion accu mulated by the preceeding generations. This need for intimate experience with the nervous system before daring to put forward some hypothesis about its mechanism of action is especially apparent when theorizing about cerebral cortex function. There is widespread agreement that processing of information in the cor tex is associated with complex spatio-temporal patterns of activity. Yet the vast majority of experimental work is based on single neuron recordings or on recordings made with gross electrodes to which tens of thousands of neurons contribute in an unknown fashion. Although these experiments have taught us a great deal about the organization and function of the cor tex, they have not enabled us to examine the spatio-temporal organization of neuronal activity in any detail.

This book describes several mathematical models of the primary visual cortex, referring them to a vast ensemble of experimental data and putting forward an original geometrical model for its functional architecture, that is, the highly specific organization of its neural connections. The book spells out the geometrical algorithms implemented by this functional architecture, or put another way, the “neurogeometry” immanent in visual perception. Focusing on the neural origins of our spatial representations, it demonstrates three things: firstly, the way the visual neurons filter the optical signal is closely related to a wavelet analysis; secondly, the contact structure of the 1-jets of the curves in the plane (the retinal plane here) is implemented by the cortical functional architecture; and lastly, the visual algorithms for integrating contours from what may be rather incomplete sensory data can be modelled by the sub-Riemannian geometry associated with this contact structure. As such, it provides readers with the first systematic interpretation of a number of important neurophysiological observations in a well-defined mathematical framework.
