Carl Bertelsmann gründete 1835 einen Verlag für fromme Gesangsbücher und pädagogische Schriften. Sein Erbe in der fünften Generation, Reinhard Mohn, übernahm nach seiner Rückkehr aus amerikanischer Kriegsgefangenschaft 1947 die Führung des Verlagshauses. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt machte das Unternehmen knapp 1.000.000 Mark Umsatz3. Unter Mohns Führung stieg das Unternehmen Bertelsmann zu einem internationalen und vielseitigen Medienkonzern auf. Im Jahr 2002 machte Bertelsmann einen Konzernumsatz von 18.312.000 4. Das Motto des heute 82 jährige Mohns „Neue Wege gehen!“ hat die Entwicklung zum Konzern entscheidend beeinflusst.
