With the continual increase in the global energy consumption, grows the demand on the power capacity, efficient production, distribution and utilization of the electrical energy generated. The role of power electronics in such contexts has been of great importance not only for the traditional power generator systems but also for the decentralized renewable energy generation, like solar and wind power. Several innovations can be observed in the field of power systems for renewable energy sources based on power electronics. Improvements can be identified regarding for example control techniques, semiconductor devices, electromagnetic components and also topologies. Such developments allow specific application requirements to be fulfilled with lower levels of losses and less material expenditure. In this thesis, power electronic topologies are analyzed with respect to the type of electrical isolation between the input and output, which may differ in three ways: galvanic, capacitive and electronic. Among the above requirements, “galvanic isolation” is a major issue in photovoltaic applications, not only due to regulations concerning the grounding of PV modules but also because of compatibility requirements of new cell technologies. Within this framework, a theoretical and practical examination on new inverter topologies is investigated with electronic isolation method in order to meet the targeted future challenge aspects.

This thesis proposes new power converter topologies suitable for aircraft systems. It also proposes both AC-DC and DC-DC types of converters for different electrical loads to improve the performance these systems. To increase fuel efficiency and reduce environmental impacts, less efficient non-electrical aircraft systems are being replaced by electrical systems. However, more electrical systems requires more electrical power to be generated in the aircraft. The increased consumption of electrical power in both civil and military aircrafts has necessitated the use of more efficient electrical power conversion technologies. This book presents acomprehensive mathematical analysis and the design and digital simulation of the power converters. Subsequently it discusses the construction of the hardware prototypes of each converter and the experimental tests carried out to verify the benefits of the proposed solutions in comparison to the existing solutions.

This book is the third in a series of four devoted to POWER ELECTRONIC CONVERTERS: The first of these concerns AC to DC conversion. The second concerns AC to AC conversion. This volume examines DC to DC conversion. The fourth is devoted to DC to AC conversion. Converters which carry out the DC-DC conversion operate by chopping the input voltage or current: they are called choppers or switch-mode power converters. Their operating frequency is not imposed by either the input or the output, both of which are at zero frequency. A frequency which is much greater than that of the industrial network can be chosen, provided that suitable configurations and semiconductor devices are used. This is the first difference compared to the rectifiers and AC-AC converters, analyzed in the previous volumes and which often operate at the industrial network frequency. The second difference concerns the commutation mode. Choppers operate in forced commutation. The beginning of an operating phase does not auto matically turn off the semiconductor devices which were conducting during the previous phase and which have to be brought to the blocking state. This turn-off must be carried out autonomously. These two differences - the higher frequency of commutations and, espe cially, the different mode of commutation -justify the first two chapters in this work: - Chapter 1 examines general notions concerning converters, supplies and loads, and more especially, how they can be characterized with regard to commutations.

In power electronics designs, the evaluation and prediction of potential fault conditions on semiconductors is essential for achieving safe operation and reliability, being short circuit (SC) one of the most probable and destructive failures. Recent improvements on Wide-Bandgap (WBG) semiconductors such as Silicon Carbide (SiC) and Gallium nitrite (GaN) enable power electronic designs with outstanding performance, reshaping the power electronics landscape. In comparison to Silicon (Si), SiC and GaN power semiconductors physically present smaller chip areas, higher maximum internal electric fields, and higher current densities. Such characteristics yield a much faster rise of the devices’ internal temperatures, worsening their SC performance. In this way, this dissertation consists of a comprehensive investigation about SC on SiC MOSFETs, GaN HEMT, and GaN E-HEMT transistors, as well as contextualizing their particularities on SC performance by comparison with that of Si IBGTs. Moreover, an investigation towards how to prevent SC occurrences besides a review of available SC protection methods is presented.

This is a reprint in book form of the Energies MDPI Journal Special Issue , entitled “Energy Storage Systems and Power Conversion Electronics for E-Transportation and Smart Grid”. The Special Issue was managed by two Guest Editors from Italy and Norway: Professor Sergio Saponara from the University of Pisa and Professor Lucian MIHET-POPA from Østfold University College, in close cooperation with the Editors from Energies. The papers published in this SI are related to the emerging trends in energy storage and power conversion electronic circuits and systems, with a specific focus on transportation electrification, and on the evolution from the electric grid to a smart grid. An extensive exploitation of renewable energy sources is foreseen for the smart grid, as well as a close integration with the energy storage and recharging systems of the electrified transportation era. Innovations at the levels of both algorithmic and hardware (i.e., power converters, electric drives, electronic control units (ECU), energy storage modules and charging stations) are proposed. Research and technology transfer activities in energy storage systems, such as batteries and super/ultra-capacitors, are essential for the success of electric transportation, and to foster the use of renewable energy sources. Energy storage systems are the key technology to solve these issues, and to increase the adoption of renewable energy sources in the smart grid.
