Many of the practical techniques developed for treating systems described by periodic differential equations have arisen in different fields of application; con sequently some procedures have not always been known to workers in areas that might benefit substantially from them. Furthermore, recent analytical methods are computationally based so that it now seems an opportune time for an applications-oriented book to be made available that, in a sense, bridges the fields in which equations with periodic coefficients arise and which draws together analytical methods that are implemented readily. This book seeks to ftll that role, from a user's and not a theoretician's view. The complexities of periodic systems often demand a computational approach. Matrix treatments therefore are emphasized here although algebraic methods have been included where they are useful in their own right or where they establish properties that can be exploited by the matrix approach. The matrix development given calls upon the nomenclature and treatment of H. D'Angelo, Linear Time Varying Systems: Analysis and Synthesis (Boston: Allyn and Bacon 1970) which deals with time-varying systems in general. It is recommended for its modernity and comprehensive approach to systems analysis by matrix methods. Since the present work is applications-oriented no attempt has been made to be complete theoretically by way of presenting all proofs, existence theorems and so on. These can be found in D'Angelo and classic and well-developed treatises such as McLachlan, N. W. : Theory and application of Mathieu functions.

A time-frequency duality is used to lead to a more complete characterization of time-varying linear systems. Several system functions are defined, which may be used to relate the input and output signals in different ways. In particular, a new transfer function is introduced that is dual to Zadeh's H transfer function for time-varying systems. The use of this transfer function leads to a new class of separable models for synthesizing time-varying systems. It is shown that under appropriate conditions either transfer function is determined uniquely from its real part. A new synthesis procedure based on the real-part sufficiency of the transfer function is described. (Author).

This book is devoted to the problem of sampled-data control of finite-dimensional linear continuous periodic (FDLCP) objects. It fills a deficit in coverage of this important subject. The methods presented here are based on the parametric transfer matrix, which has proven successful in the study of sampled-data systems with linear time-invariant objects. The book shows that this concept can be successfully transferred to sampled-data systems with FDLCP objects. It is set out in five parts: · · an introduction to the frequency approach for the mathematical description of FDLCP objects including the determination of their structure and their representation as a serial connection of periodic modulators and a linear time-invariant object; · construction of parametric transfer matrix for different types of open and closed sampled-data systems with FDLCP objects; · the solution of problems of causal modal control of FDLCP objects based on the mathematical apparatus of determinant polynomial equations; · consideration of the problem of constructing a quadratic quality functional for the H2-optimization problem of a single-loop synchronous sampled-data system with control delay; · description of the general H2-optimization procedure. Necessary mathematical reference material is included at relevant points in the book. Sampled-Data Control for Periodic Objects is of use to: scientists and engineers involved in research and design of systems of systems with FDLCP objects; graduate students wishing to broaden their scope of competence; their instructors; and mathematicians working in the field of control theory.

This volume is the first of the three volume publication containing the proceedings of the 1989 International Symposium on the Mathematical Theory of Networks and Systems (MTNS-89), which was held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, June 19-23, 1989. The International Symposia MTNS focus attention on problems from system and control theory, circuit theory and signal processing, which, in general, require application of sophisticated mathematical tools, such as from function and operator theory, linear algebra and matrix theory, differential and algebraic geometry. The interaction between advanced mathematical methods and practical engineering problems of circuits, systems and control, which is typical for MTNS, turns out to be most effective and is, as these proceedings show, a continuing source of exciting advances. The first volume contains invited papers and a large selection of other symposium presentations on the general theory of deterministic and stochastic systems with an emphasis on realization and modelling. A wide variety of recent results on approximate realization and system identification, stochastic dynamical systems, discrete event systems,- o systems, singular systems and nonstandard models IS presented. Preface vi Also a few papers on applications in hydrology and hydraulics are included. The titles of the two other volumes are: Robust Control of Linear Sys tems and Nonlinear Control (volume 2) and Signal Processing. Scatter ing and Operator Theory. and Numerical Methods (volume 3). The Editors are most grateful to the about 300 reviewers for their help in the refereeing process. The Editors thank Ms. G. Bijleveld and Ms.

Since the 1960s Digital Signal Processing (DSP) has been one of the most intensive fields of study in electronics. However, little has been produced specifically on linear non-adaptive time-variant digital filters. * The first book to be dedicated to Time-Variant Filtering * Provides a complete introduction to the theory and practice of one of the subclasses of time-varying digital systems, parametric digital filters and oscillators * Presents many examples demonstrating the application of the techniques An indispensable resource for professional engineers, researchers and PhD students involved in digital signal and image processing, as well as postgraduate students on courses in computer, electrical, electronic and similar departments.
