Rural schools are faced with variety of pressures that are competing for attention within the community. This research assessed students’ attitudes towards performance-based assessment. It also aimed that instructional material will be developed. It utilized descriptive-quantitative research design and used weighted mean, t-test for two independent groups and Pearson r. Respondents of the study were 29 teachers and 238 students. The assessment ratings of students towards their attitude on the four types of assessment is significantly different from the assessment ratings of the teachers. The assessment ratings of students towards their attitude on performance-based assessment is not significantly different from the assessment ratings of the teachers. The students’ attitude on the four types of assessment as assessed by the students have significant relationship with the students’ attitude on performance-based assessment. The students’ attitude on the four types of assessment as assessed by the teachers have no significant relationship with the students’ attitude on performance-based assessment. The school officials should encourage teachers to always exhibit positive teaching behavior to further learning of students. An instructional material can be developed emphasizing the usage of performance-based assessment tools.

Performance-based assessment, such as portfolios, presentations, and participation, is currently being used in many second language programs. A review of the literature prior to this research revealed that although there have been a number of studies and papers on performance-based assessment, including alternative assessment and authentic assessment, few have reported student reactions to this wave of assessment techniques. Therefore, the attitudes of adult English as a Second Language (ESL) students (N = 127) to performance-based assessment (portfolios, presentations, and participation) versus more traditional types of tests were surveyed by means of a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative and qualitative results suggest that the participants in the study perceived all four types of assessment positively. Analysis of background variables suggests that there were interaction effects for level of language proficiency and home country with regard to attitude toward assessment type. Other biographical variables showed little or no relationship to attitudes.

This study investigated the effects of performance-based assessments on eighth-grade students' mathematical achievements and attitudes, compares to the effects of multiple-choice tests. The research questions were explored by administering two different sets of mathematical assessments to two groups: One group used a set of multiple-choice tests as intervening tests, and the other group used performance-based assessments as intervening tests. After completing all of the intervening tests, both of the groups took the same post-test. The data analysis indicated that the group using performance-based assessments as intervening assessments had significantly higher scores than group using multiple-choice tests as intervening tests on the post-test. The students' attitudes toward mathematics did not significantly differ by group. However, closer examination of the raw data suggested a positive relationship between the use of performance-based assessments and increased levels of students' attitudes, interests and motivations toward mathematics.

An assessment of student achievement and of student and instructor attitudes during the period from January, 1975, to September 1975, was made by the U.S. Air Force Human Resources Laboratory (AFHRL) and the Air Training Command (ATC) as part of their jointly-conducted Service Test of the PLATO IV System at Chanute Air Force Base. Analyses of the achievement and attitude data were carried out by the Military Training Centers (MTC) and PLATO Educational Evaluation and Research (PEER) groups of CERL and will be reported as products of the AFHRL/ATC evaluation effort. It is the understanding of the MTC and PEER groups that the AFHRL/ATC reports will treat the instructional effectiveness and instructional impact results of the Service Test independently and, hence, will not attempt to relate achievement results to attitudes. We believe, however, that a complete examination of the achievement-attitude relationship will enhance the understanding of the outcomes of the Chanute Service Test and may lead to useful generalizations or hypotheses. We have planned, therefore, a series of additional analyses to relate attitudinal and achievement outcomes. (Author).

This monograph analyses and describes successful educational actions with a specific focus on vulnerable groups (i.e. youth, migrants, cultural groups e.g. Roma, women, and people with disabilities). Concrete data that shows success in school performance in subject matters such as math or language will be provided, as well as children, teachers and families accounts of the impact of this success. Alongside, there is an analysis of the relationship between these children’s educational performance with their inclusion or exclusion from different areas of society (i.e. housing, health, employment, and social and political participation).
