Analysis of the New Metals: Titanium, Zirconium, Hafnium, Niobium, Tantalum, Tungsten and their Alloys focuses on methods for the analysis of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, niobium, tantalum, tungsten, and their alloys. Emphasis is on the procedures used in Imperial Metal Industries (Kynoch) Limited's laboratories for the analysis of these metals. These procedures include the oxide-resin procedure, solution procedure, and the point-to-plane spectrographic procedure. Comprised of six chapters, this book begins with an overview of special procedures for obtaining representative samples, including the use of titanium or zirconium sponge (Kroll process) as well as titanium granules (ICI sodium process). Subsequent chapters discuss the identification of titanium and its alloys such as aluminum, boron, calcium, carbon, and copper by means of the point-to-plane spectrographic procedure, a Fuess metal spectroscope, and chemical spot-tests; spectroscopic analysis of zirconium, zirconium alloys, and ionide-refined hafnium; and spectroscopic analysis of niobium, tantalum, tungsten, and their alloys. This monograph will be useful for undergraduate students, educators, practitioners, and researchers in metallurgy.

Charge density analysis of materials provides a firm basis for the evaluation of the properties of materials. The design and engineering of a new combination of metals requires a firm knowledge of intermolecular features. Recent advances in technology and high-speed computation have made the crystal X-ray diffraction technique a unique tool for the determination of charge density distribution in molecular crystal. Methods have been developed to make experimental probes capable of unraveling the features of charge densities in the intra- and inter-molecular regions of crystal structures. In Metal and Alloy Bonding - An Experimental Analysis, the structural details of materials are elucidated with the X-ray diffraction technique. Analyses of the charge density and the local and average structure are given to reveal the structural properties of technologically important materials. Readers will gain a new understanding of the local and average structure of existing materials. The electron density, bonding, and charge transfer studies in Metal and Alloy Bonding - An Experimental Analysis contain useful information for researchers in the fields of physics, chemistry, materials science, and metallurgy. The properties described in these studies can contribute to the successful engineering of these technologically important materials.

This book presents an overview of the evolution and opportunities associated with traditional as well as upcoming fields in the areas of materials, metallurgy, and manufacturing. There are a lot of interesting fields at this trijunction, such as alloy design, bio-materials, composites, high entropy alloys, sensors, electronic materials, and materials degradation. The progress in these fields is further fuelled by the advances in the analysis and fabrication techniques such as correlative microscopy, additive manufacturing, and surface engineering. This book discusses the above topics/fields covering advanced analysis techniques, fabrication methods, and various technological applications. Every chapter walks through the basics of the respective field and comprehensively discusses the current developments and future avenues, to arrive at a point where the reader acquires an overall view of the field. Special emphasis is given to the scientific fundamentals and application potential, in a way that readers of all backgrounds can get benefited. The chapters connect the current developments with the future avenues, to help the researchers foresee the future technologies, in their respective fields. This text will appeal to experienced researchers, practitioners, and students alike.

Excerpt from The Analysis of Non-Ferrous Alloys The first edition of this book was published just as the Great War commenced. The war did a great deal to encourage the accurate control of metals by means of chemical analysis, and the non -ferrous metals and alloys experienced this stimulus to a marked extent. In addition, the war brought to the front many and various alloys which previously had been either unknown or very little used. A notable example of this effect was the greatly extended of the light alloys of aluminium. Despite this dual develop ment in the field occupied by the non-ferrous alloys, it cannot be said that there was any concomitant development in the methods employed in their analysis. Some methods were brought forward, but the advance was not startling. The main duty, therefore, of the authors in presenting a new edition is to provide the best analytical methods for those new alloys that have been brought into prominence. They have therefore added to the book methods for the analysis of aluminium and its light alloys, and since the separation of aluminium and zinc presents the most difficult problem in the analysis of such alloys, they have dealt with this separation at some length in a separate chapter. Other alloys which now call for adequate treatment are mainly those of nickel. The principal alloys of this metal are those with copper and those with chromium and iron. Methods for the analysis of all these alloys have been included in this new edition. The other notable additions deal with the determination of the special elements, such as iron or manganese, that are added to the copper-zinc and copper tin alloys in order to give these alloys mechanical properties of special value. Determination of metals is a major part of the work of environmental testing laboratories. EPA and DEP methodology releases provide information only for selected areas of metals sampling and analysis, and their language makes them unsuitable for teaching and training purposes. Environmental Sampling and Analysis for Metals is a comprehensive and easy-to-read text for laboratory technicians and analytical chemists who need a guide for analyzing metals in environmental samples and a reference for analytical and quality control procedures. The book provides both theoretical and practical applications in metals analysis of environmental samples and incorporates the latest in analytical techniques, instrumentation, and regulations. Topics include sample collection, preservation, step-by-step analytical procedures, complete QA/QC requirements, data validation, and more. It also provides an overview of the occurrence, source, and fate of metallic substances in the environment, as well as their control by regulations and standards. Furthermore, the authors provide guidelines to help you prepare and understand reports. The analytical methods presented in Environmental Sampling and Analysis for Metals will be useful to anyone who produces, uses, or evaluates analytical data, and will be a valuable tool in environmental education and training programs.
