"The purpose of this report is to provide both a general overview of water quality conditions in the Athabasca River, in the form of summary statistics and time series graphs for all four Long-Term River Network (LTRN) sites, and more in-depth statistical trend analyses on long-term data for the Athabasca and Old Fort monitoring stations. Sampling actvities on the Athabasca River have frequently examined a wide range of trace organic contaminant (e.g. pesticides, priority pollutants, chlorinated phenolics, PAH). However, due to limited sampling frequency and relatively few detections, most data associated with these trace contaminants are inappropriate for statistical trend assessment. Analysis of these data is limited to basic summary statistics in this report."--Document.

Over the past fifty years, major rivers throughout the province of Alberta have been undergoing regular monthly sampling for a wide range of water quality variables. Known as the Long-Term River Network (LTRN), this monitoring program has resulted in an extensive database of water quality information for the Province. Due to the broad temporal coverage and continuity of many of these data, they lend themselves particularly well to statistical trend assessment - a very useful way of examining changes in water quality over time. Where detected, statistically significant trends in various aspects of water quality can be used for several purposes, including the evaluation of human impacts on water quality, the development and assessment of watershed management initiatives, and the prediction of future conditions. The purpose of this report was to provide both a general summary of water quality conditions in the Oldman River and to subject the extensive long-term dataset to a thorough series of trend assessments.--Document.

The NTBS was designed to address the ecological concerns about pulp mill expansion, and to increase scientific knowledge about environmental conditions [ecology, ecosystem sustainability, water pollution and control, habitat, effect on fish and fishing, etc.] in the major river systems of the north. The study's objectives were to gather and interpret sound scientific information about the basins, develop appropriate recommendations for basin management, and communicate effectively with the public. The government response report confirms the governments' commitment to ecosystem sustainability and to pollution control in northern rivers. First Nations and Metis aboriginal [native] peoples contributed significantly to the NRBS.

This report summarizes the results of a project conducted to gather existing information about drinking water quality, drinking water facilities, and water treatment effectiveness in the area covered by the Northern River Basins Study (Peace, Slave, and Athabasca River basins in northern Alberta). The report includes a comparison of water treatment performance to the Canada Drinking Water Quality Guidelines. The appendices contain summaries of parameters in the treated water survey, of the comparisons between raw and treated water, and of samples not meeting the Guidelines, as well as an inventory of treatment facilities giving facility name and location, water source, community population, treatment method used, raw storage capacity, and treated volumes.

Alberta Environment and Water (AEW) monitors surface water quality of provincial lakes to evaluate short- and longer-term environmental conditions, and to inform lake management and policy. The data are also important to improve scientific knowledge on ecological processes in the lakes, especially as it relates to nutrients and productivity. The main objectives of this study were to: review the AEW provincial water wuality database and select lakes with long-term data suitable for statistical trend analysis; provide an overview of the conditions and long-term trends of water quality in the selected lakes; and investigate the influences or relationships of water management and lake level on lake water quality.--Document.

Co-published with UNESCO A product of the UNESCO-IHP project on Water and Cultural Diversity, this book represents an effort to examine the complex role water plays as a force in sustaining, maintaining, and threatening the viability of culturally diverse peoples. It is argued that water is a fundamental human need, a human right, and a core sustaining element in biodiversity and cultural diversity. The core concepts utilized in this book draw upon a larger trend in sustainability science, a recognition of the synergism and analytical potential in utilizing a coupled biological and social systems analysis, as the functioning viability of nature is both sustained and threatened by humans.

Praise for the First Edition " . . . an excellent addition to an upper-level undergraduate course on environmental statistics, and . . . a 'must-have' desk reference for environmental practitioners dealing with censored datasets." —Vadose Zone Journal Statistics for Censored Environmental Data Using Minitab® and R, Second Edition introduces and explains methods for analyzing and interpreting censored data in the environmental sciences. Adapting survival analysis techniques from other fields, the book translates well-established methods from other disciplines into new solutions for environmental studies. This new edition applies methods of survival analysis, including methods for interval-censored data to the interpretation of low-level contaminants in environmental sciences and occupational health. Now incorporating the freely available R software as well as Minitab® into the discussed analyses, the book features newly developed and updated material including: A new chapter on multivariate methods for censored data Use of interval-censored methods for treating true nondetects as lower than and separate from values between the detection and quantitation limits ("remarked data") A section on summing data with nondetects A newly written introduction that discusses invasive data, showing why substitution methods fail Expanded coverage of graphical methods for censored data The author writes in a style that focuses on applications rather than derivations, with chapters organized by key objectives such as computing intervals, comparing groups, and correlation. Examples accompany each procedure, utilizing real-world data that can be analyzed using the Minitab® and R software macros available on the book's related website, and extensive references direct readers to authoritative literature from the environmental sciences. Statistics for Censored Environmental Data Using Minitab® and R, Second Edition is an excellent book for courses on environmental statistics at the upper-undergraduate and graduate levels. The book also serves as a valuable reference for??environmental professionals, biologists, and ecologists who focus on the water sciences, air quality, and soil science.
