This study draws upon the resources of both contemporary analytic theology and the theological interpretation of the New Testament in order to investigate a set of important issues in Christology. It is the first work in analytic Christology to draw upon both recent scholarship in biblical studies and recent contributions to analytic philosophy and theology. Thomas H. McCall explores the themes of union with Christ and the faith of Christ as these are developed by the "apocalyptic" and "New Perspective" interpreters of Pauline theology. The volume offers a careful analysis of recent dogmatic proposals about the identity of Christ and the doctrine of election, and provides an examination of debates over the subordination of the Son in Hebrews. It also probes the relationship of the incarnate Son to his Father in Johannine theology. McCall presents an exegetically-grounded theological engagement with recent work on the place of logic in the doctrine of the incarnation.

The Christocentric homiletic is considered one of the leading contemporary approaches within the evangelical hermeneutic and homiletic society. This is due to the convincing theological justification, practical guidance, and demonstrative examples of Christocentric sermons from three North American scholars: Sidney Greidanus, Edmund Clowney, and Bryan Chapell. Its popularity, however, has not made this approach immune to criticism. Opponents of the Christocentric approach often criticize the preaching model for operating on a general interpretive level, having repetitive sermon goals, and delivering sermons that lack adequate application, among other things. The suggested antidote to these issues in current scholarship is for the Christocentric homiletic to become less Christocentric and more Theocentric. This book enters the current homiletical debate on Christocentric preaching by placing the homiletical method in conversation with the field of Christology. In doing so, it points out that the Christocentric homiletic is embedded in a Christology from above, contributing to its strengths and weaknesses. This book suggests that if the Christocentric method takes the Christologies “from below” of N. T. Wright and Wolfhart Pannenberg seriously, it can address specific weaknesses and find resources to enhance some of its strengths without negating its central conviction of preaching Christ in every sermon. It defends the unique proposal that the Christocentric method can address its criticisms by becoming more Christocentric and not more Theocentric.

Describing Jesus as an “agent” of divine actions, or as one who possesses human “agency,” is commonplace in christological discussions. Yet these discussions often wade in a shallow understanding of the terms' meanings and the theological implications of such claims. For example, while many theologians who are committed to the definition of Chalcedon consider Jesus one agent, we might ask if this implies that the triune God comprises “three agents?” Or, if Christ possesses “singular agency,” how are his divinity and humanity operative in his actions? In response, this work draws from the theology of John Owen and advancements in philosophy of action in order to offer an account of divine and human agency in christological action from within the Reformed tradition. It provides clarity to the christological and trinitarian uses of the language of “agent/agency” in Christ and attends to the theological (esp. trinitarian) entailments therein. While at first glance there may appear to be internal inconsistencies with accounts that subscribe to classical trinitarianism and Reformed Christological agency, this book argues that Owen helps us recover an understanding of christological agency that is internally coherent and theologically prudent. As such the Reformed tradition can articulate Christological “agency” in a way that is coherent with the testimony of Scripture, the ecumenical councils, and classical trinitarianism while contributing to contemporary theological discussions. The case not only provides terminological clarity and theological coherence, but also inclines Christians to appreciate the trinitarian love of God in Christ's action and the human sympathy of Christ for his people.
