Rapid developments in multivariable spectral theory have led to important and fascinating results which also have applications in other mathematical disciplines. In this book, classical results from the cohomology theory of Banach algebras, multidimensional spectral theory, and complex analytic geometry have been freshly interpreted using the language of homological algebra. It has also been used to give in sights into new developments in the spectral theory of linear operators. Various concepts from function theory and complex analytic geometry are drawn together and used to give a new approach to concrete spectral computations. The advantages of this approach are illustrated by a variety of examples, unexpected applications, and conceptually new ideas which should stimulate further research.

New Approaches In Spectral Decomposition written by Ridgley Lange and has been published by American Mathematical Soc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992 with Mathematics categories.
Aimed at a general mathematical audience, this book provides a careful exposition of developments in the theory of spectral decomposition. Bringing the reader from the basics up to the level of current research in the area at the time of writing, Lange and Wang present an accessible account of the techniques used in the theory and applications of decomposable operators and related classes of operators. The book begins with a discussion of criteria for decomposable and related types of operators, and an analysis that relates and distinguishes among them. Perturbation theory of decomposable and other operators, applications to classical Hilberty space operators, quasisimilarity, and a new class of weakly decomposable operators are also discussed. The book closes with an exposition of some classical theories on invariant subspaces for subdecomposable and hyponormal operators, and a presentation of the parallel spectral theory of commuting systems.

Modern local spectral theory is built on the classical spectral theorem, a fundamental result in single-operator theory and Hilbert spaces. This book provides an in-depth introduction to the natural expansion of this fascinating topic of Banach space operator theory, whose pioneers include Dunford, Bishop, Foias, and others. Assuming only modest prerequisites of its readership, it gives complete coverage of the field, including the fundamental recent work by Albrecht and Eschmeier which provides the full duality theory for Banach space operators. It is highlighted by many characterizations of decomposable operators, and of other related, important classes of operators, as well as an in-depth study of their spectral properties, including identifications of distinguished parts, and results on permanence properties of spectra with respect to several types of similarity. Also found is a thorough and quite elementary treatment of the modern single- operator duality theory; this theory has many applications, both to general issues of classification and to such celebrated problems as the invariant subspace problems. A long chapter - almost a book in itself - is devoted to the use of local spectral theory in the study of spectral properties of multipliers and convolution operators. Another one describes its connections to automatic continuity theory. Written in a careful and detailed style, it contains numerous examples, many simplified proofs of classical results, and extensive references. It concludes with a list of interesting open problems, suitable for continued research.

Forming functions of operators is a basic task of many areas of linear analysis and quantum physics. Weyl’s functional calculus, initially applied to the position and momentum operators of quantum mechanics, also makes sense for finite systems of selfadjoint operators. By using the Cauchy integral formula available from Clifford analysis, the book examines how functions of a finite collection of operators can be formed when the Weyl calculus is not defined. The technique is applied to the determination of the support of the fundamental solution of a symmetric hyperbolic system of partial differential equations and to proving the boundedness of the Cauchy integral operator on a Lipschitz surface.

A signi?cant sector of the development of spectral theory outside the classical area of Hilbert space may be found amongst at multipliers de?ned on a complex commutative Banach algebra A. Although the general theory of multipliers for abstract Banach algebras has been widely investigated by several authors, it is surprising how rarely various aspects of the spectral theory, for instance Fredholm theory and Riesz theory, of these important classes of operators have been studied. This scarce consideration is even more surprising when one observes that the various aspects of spectral t- ory mentioned above are quite similar to those of a normal operator de?ned on a complex Hilbert space. In the last ten years the knowledge of the spectral properties of multip- ers of Banach algebras has increased considerably, thanks to the researches undertaken by many people working in local spectral theory and Fredholm theory. This research activity recently culminated with the publication of the book of Laursen and Neumann [214], which collects almost every thing that is known about the spectral theory of multipliers.

The theory of operators stands at the intersection of the frontiers of modern analysis and its classical counterparts; of algebra and quantum mechanics; of spectral theory and partial differential equations; of the modern global approach to topology and geometry; of representation theory and harmonic analysis; and of dynamical systems and mathematical physics. The present collection of papers represents contributions to a conference, and they have been carefully selected with a view to bridging different but related areas of mathematics which have only recently displayed an unexpected network of interconnections, as well as new and exciting cross-fertilizations. Our unify ing theme is the algebraic view and approach to the study of operators and their applications. The complementarity between the diversity of topics on the one hand and the unity of ideas on the other has been stressed. Some of the longer contributions represent material from lectures (in expanded form and with proofs for the most part). However, the shorter papers, as well as the longer ones, are an integral part of the picture; they have all been carefully refereed and revised with a view to a unity of purpose, timeliness, readability, and broad appeal. The main goal of this book is to describe various aspects of the theory of joint spectra for matrices and linear operators. It is suitable for a graduate-level topic course in spectral theory and/or representation theory. The first three chapters can also be adopted for an advanced course in linear algebra. Centered around the concept of projective spectrum, the book presents a coherent treatment of fundamental elements from a wide range of mathematical disciplines, such as complex analysis, complex dynamics, differential geometry, functional analysis, group theory, and Lie algebras. Researchers and students, particularly those who aspire to gain a bigger picture of mathematics, will find this book both informative and resourceful.
