In the competitive world of modern engineering, rigorous and definite design methodologies are needed. However, many parts of engineering design are performed in either an ad-hoc manner or based on the intuition of the engineer. This is the first book to look at both stages of the design process – conceptual design and detailed design – and detail design methodologies for every step of the design process. The following analytic design methodologies are introduced and their usefulness is explored with many mathematical and practical examples: Axiomatic design; Optimization; Design of experiments; Robust design; Structural optimization; Dynamic response optimization; and Multidisciplinary optimization. Case studies show how practical design problems can be solved with analytic design methods. Students will find this book an excellent introduction to the subject. The book’s practical focus will interest practising engineers as a practical handbook of design.

Guide To Framing Design Practice For Ux written by John Long and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-09-27 with Computers categories.

The scope of the book is UX. It presents a comprehensive guide for readers to better engage with the framing of UX design practice. The guide characterises UX as a movement, whose members are developing shared ideas to specify and to implement HCI (Human-Computer Interaction) as UX. The book is based on the analysis of the conduct and reporting of framing UX design practice, contributed by experienced UX practitioners. It surveys the various means by which UX practitioners conduct and report their design practices. These include trial and error; implement, test, and specify; and implement, evaluate, and iterate. These practices apply UX frameworks, UX approaches, and UX methods and are typically reported in the form of UX case studies. The book differs from top-down, formal, and framework-driven approaches. In contrast, it takes a bottom-up, informal, and practice-driven approach. In a dynamic field such as UX, there is seldom time to stop and think about the wider issues associated with design practice and its related trends. But this book creates that opportunity for UX practitioners to locate and reflect on their design practice—what they are doing and why they are doing it. The guide creates a space in which UX practitioners are informed of current trends that they can incorporate into their own workflows. Readers benefiting from this book include those working in customer experience design, experience-centred design, and human experience design. It will also be of interest to undergraduate and graduate students trying to make sense of the different ways of conducting and reporting HCI as UX. Further, it provides grounding for young researchers making their way in the fast developing world of UX.

Design Research Through Practice: From the Lab, Field, and Showroom focuses on one type of contemporary design research known as constructive design research. It looks at three approaches to constructive design research: Lab, Field, and Showroom. The book shows how theory, research practice, and the social environment create commonalities between these approaches. It illustrates how one can successfully integrate design and research based on work carried out in industrial design and interaction design. The book begins with an overview of the rise of constructive design research, as well as constructive research programs and methodologies. It then describes the logic of studying design in the laboratory, design ethnography and field work, and the origins of the Showroom and its foundation on art and design rather than on science or the social sciences. It also discusses the theoretical background of constructive design research, along with modeling and prototyping of design items. Finally, it considers recent work in Lab that focuses on action and the body instead of thinking and knowing. Many kinds of designers and people interested in design will find this book extremely helpful. - Gathers design research experts from traditional lab science, social science, art, industrial design, UX and HCI to lend tested practices and how they can be used in a variety of design projects - Provides a multidisciplinary story of the whole design process, with proven and teachable techniques that can solve both academic and practical problems - Presents key examples illustrating how research is applied and vignettes summarizing the key how-to details of specific projects

Design Engineering and Science teaches the theory and practice of axiomatic design (AD). It explains the basics of how to conceive and deliver solutions to a variety of design problems. The text shows how a logical framework and scientific basis for design can generate creative solutions in many fields, including engineering, materials, organizations, and a variety of large systems. Learning to apply the systematic methods advocated by AD, a student can construct designs that lead to better environmental sustainability and to increased quality of life for the end-user at the same time reducing the overall cost of the product development process. Examples of previous innovations that take advantage of AD methods include: • on-line electric vehicle design for electric buses with wireless power supply; • mobile harbors that allow unloading of large ships in shallow waters; • microcellular plastics with enhanced toughness and lower weight; and • organizational changes in companies and universities resulting in more efficient and competitive ways of working. The book is divided into two parts. Part I provides detailed and thorough instruction in the fundamentals of design, discussing why design is so important. It explains the relationship between and the selection of functional requirements, design parameters and process variables, and the representation of design outputs. Part II presents multiple applications of AD, including examples from manufacturing, healthcare, and materials processing. Following a course based on this text students learn to create new products and design bespoke manufacturing systems. They will gain insight into how to create imaginative design solutions that satisfy customer needs and learn to avoid introducing undue complexity into their designs. This informative text provides practical and academic insight for engineering design students and will help instructors teach the subject in a novel and more rigorous fashion. Their knowledge of AD will stand former students in good stead in the workplace as these methods are both taught and used in many leading industrial concerns.

This book provides a discussion of the general impact of WTO membership on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, and addresses the political and economic impact on cross-Strait relations of common membership. The book begins with an introduction which analyzes the state of cross-Strait economic and political relations on the eve of dual accession to the WTO and briefly introduces the chapters which follow. The first chapter discusses the concessions made by both sides in their accession agreements and is followed by two chapters which describe the manner in which the Taiwan economy was reformed to achieve compliance as well as the specific, restrictive trade regime that was put into place to manage mainland trade. The next two chapters deal with the implications of that restrictive trade regime for the Taiwan economy in Asia and with the nature of the interactions between the two sides within the WTO. The final four chapters of the volume examine the impact of membership on four sectors of the economy: finance; agriculture; electronics and automobiles. There is a post-script which briefly covers developments since the chapters were completed.
