A pro-p group is the inverse limit of some system of finite p-groups, that is, of groups of prime-power order where the prime - conventionally denoted p - is fixed. Thus from one point of view, to study a pro-p group is the same as studying an infinite family of finite groups; but a pro-p group is also a compact topological group, and the compactness works its usual magic to bring 'infinite' problems down to manageable proportions. The p-adic integers appeared about a century ago, but the systematic study of pro-p groups in general is a fairly recent development. Although much has been dis covered, many avenues remain to be explored; the purpose of this book is to present a coherent account of the considerable achievements of the last several years, and to point the way forward. Thus our aim is both to stimulate research and to provide the comprehensive background on which that research must be based. The chapters cover a wide range. In order to ensure the most authoritative account, we have arranged for each chapter to be written by a leading contributor (or contributors) to the topic in question. Pro-p groups appear in several different, though sometimes overlapping, contexts.

Manifolds over complete nonarchimedean fields together with notions like tangent spaces and vector fields form a convenient geometric language to express the basic formalism of p-adic analysis. The volume starts with a self-contained and detailed introduction to this language. This includes the discussion of spaces of locally analytic functions as topological vector spaces, important for applications in representation theory. The author then sets up the analytic foundations of the theory of p-adic Lie groups and develops the relation between p-adic Lie groups and their Lie algebras. The second part of the book contains, for the first time in a textbook, a detailed exposition of Lazard's algebraic approach to compact p-adic Lie groups, via his notion of a p-valuation, together with its application to the structure of completed group rings.

The aim of this book is to serve both as an introduction to profinite groups and as a reference for specialists in some areas of the theory. In neither of these two aspects have we tried to be encyclopedic. After some necessary background, we thoroughly develop the basic properties of profinite groups and introduce the main tools of the subject in algebra, topology and homol ogy. Later we concentrate on some topics that we present in detail, including recent developments in those areas. Interest in profinite groups arose first in the study of the Galois groups of infinite Galois extensions of fields. Indeed, profinite groups are precisely Galois groups and many of the applications of profinite groups are related to number theory. Galois groups carry with them a natural topology, the Krull topology. Under this topology they are Hausdorff compact and totally dis connected topological groups; these properties characterize profinite groups. Another important fact about profinite groups is that they are determined by their finite images under continuous homomorphisms: a profinite group is the inverse limit of its finite images. This explains the connection with abstract groups. If G is an infinite abstract group, one is interested in deducing prop erties of G from corresponding properties of its finite homomorphic images.

On September 1-7, 1996 a conference on Groups and Geometries took place in lovely Siena, Italy. It brought together experts and interested mathematicians from numerous countries. The scientific program centered around invited exposi tory lectures; there also were shorter research announcements, including talks by younger researchers. The conference concerned a broad range of topics in group theory and geometry, with emphasis on recent results and open problems. Special attention was drawn to the interplay between group-theoretic methods and geometric and combinatorial ones. Expanded versions of many of the talks appear in these Proceedings. This volume is intended to provide a stimulating collection of themes for a broad range of algebraists and geometers. Among those themes, represented within the conference or these Proceedings, are aspects of the following: 1. the classification of finite simple groups, 2. the structure and properties of groups of Lie type over finite and algebraically closed fields of finite characteristic, 3. buildings, and the geometry of projective and polar spaces, and 4. geometries of sporadic simple groups. This volume contains the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Finite and Locally Finite Groups held in Istanbul, Turkey, 14-27 August 1994, at which there were about 90 participants from some 16 different countries. INTRODUCTION A locally finite group is a group in which every finite set of elements is contained in a finite subgroup. The study of locally finite groups began with Schur's result that a periodic linear group is, in fact, locally finite. The simple locally finite groups are of particular interest. In view of the classification of the finite simple groups and advances in representation theory, it is natural to pursue classification theorems for simple locally finite groups. This was one of the central themes of the Istanbul conference and significant progress is reported herein. The theory of simple locally finite groups intersects many areas of group theory and representation theory, so this served as a focus for several articles in the volume. This is the fifth proceedings volume published under the Women in Numbers umbrella. The WIN workshops and their proceedings volumes are part of the WIN network, aimed at highlighting the research of women and gender minorities in number theory as well as increasing their participation and boosting their potential collaborations in number theory and related fields. The volume contains research articles in the mathematical area of number theory, written by teams of scholars at all levels in the field. More information about the network, its goals and purpose, past and future conferences, and past proceedings volumes, can be found on the WIN website. This volume contains research outcomes and results produced by the collaborative research groups created under the Women in Numbers V workshop, the 5th in its series. The actual workshop was to take place in 2020 at the Banff International Research Station in Banff, Canada, but could not take place onsite due to COVID. The associated research groups, each consisting of 1-2 leaders and 2-4 junior researchers, were formed nevertheless and their collaborations went ahead in purely virtual form, as well as other papers by author teams for which at least 50% of the authors identify as women or gender minorities. These contributions include original research and survey articles in a wide variety of subareas within number theory. The former present new cutting-edge research that will be of interest to experts in the field, to the benefit of their own research. The survey articles serve as an accessible introduction for graduate students and other readers to areas of number theory that may be outside their area of expertise.
