Excerpt from Analytical Manual of the English Bible In subsequent years, When he attempted to direct others in a study of the Scriptures, he followed the method of analysis which he had found so helpful in his own experience; and, in making the method as complete and comprehensive as possible, be reviewed and perfected his earlier work. This method has proved so successful, and has so invariably awakened the keen interest of Bible students, both in class work and in individual study, that it is presented to Bible readers in general. It is the single object of this work to offer, in analytical form, an outline of the scope and the details of the Bible, and to give this in a manner which will vividly and permanently impress upon the mind that Which is read in the sacred volume. There is no attempt at interpretation or comment; and the brief notes which accompany the analysis are intended only to make the analysis clear to the understanding. This analysis can not be used as a substitute for the Bible. Upon the contrary, the student must use the Bible in the study of every part. But the analysis Will assist the reader in remembering what he reads, and in com prehending its place and relation in the great Book of truth. Excerpt from Outlines of an Introduction to the Old Testament These Outlines are the outgrowth of fifteen years of study and teaching. They are designed simply to indicate the lines along which study is demanded if one is to understand the teachings of the Old Testa ment. NO effort has been made to present an exhaust ive review of the ideas which have been advanced by others in regard to these remarkable books, or to give completeness to the views of the author. Only such points as seem necessary to a correct understanding of the text are presented and these are stated in the briefest form, with such references as may guide the way to further study. If the position here taken seem conservative, it is not because the writer has ignored the later criticism or underestimates its value, but because the newer ideas do not seem to be sufficiently established to demand the abandonment of the older. Great gain has already come from the learned and laborious investigations of the new school of criticism and we hope for still richer fruitage in the future, but the results thus far secured are too vague to become a satisfactory basis for the interpretation of Scripture. Excerpt from An Outline of the History of the Literature of the Old Testament With Chronological Tables: For the History of the Israelites, and Other Aids to Aids Explanation of the Old Testament On pp. 225-247, there is an addition to the matter previously contained in the Supplements, in the form of a Survey of the constituents of the Sources of all the historical books from Genesis to 2 Kings, together with Ezra and Nehemiah. This was requisite because we could not take it for granted that the readers of our Reprint would use along with it the Translation (see above), in which the various documents are distinguished by marginal letters. The Survey now added is naturally in general agreement with those assumptions of literary criticism on which the Translation and the Outline are based. But the renewed weighing of the critical problems and the employment of contributions to the analysis of the sources made by others since 1894, have led to corrections of all kinds, and in some cases (especially with regard to the Third Book of Moses) to more precise results concerning certain strata of the Sources. Excerpt from Outlines of Old Testament History: Progressive Grade, With Written-Answer Questions for the Older Classes This Outline of Old Testament History has been prepared in the hope that it may be found useful in giving a clear conception of the progress of events connected with the history of the chosen people. One of the most important questions in the preparation of such an outline is whether the lessons shall be extended over two or more years, or be condensed into a single year. At first thought the larger number of lessons may seem preferable because they give time for a more careful study of details. But in outline study it is of the first importance not to dwell on details, for otherwise the outlines are lost in a maze of subordinate incidents. Such has been the experience of multitudes in the study of the Old Testament. The principal thing to be sought in such study is a comprehensive survey of the whole history, and the smaller the number of lessons in which this can be done the better. The details may be studied later as occasion arises. A careful analysis of Old Testament history shows that it can readily be treated in about forty topics, each repte senting a distinct forward step in the history. We regard it of primary importance that each of these topics or steps be covered by a single lesson and no more, so that the topic and its significance shall stand out clearly before the mind. These outlines have been arranged in accordance with this principle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Old Testament Studies: An Outline of Old Testament TheologyThe bible is a many-sided book, and it should be read and studied from many points of view. The truths which were conveyed through the centuries to God's ancient people, and which through them were intended to be conveyed to us, must be thoroughly and rightly grasped before they can be safely applied. This book is the brief development of a plan of Old Testament study which I have pursued for several years, and with great profit to myself. If any Bible student who has not already done so, should develop for himself this or some similar topical plan, neither could he fail to find it very beneficial, especially if it should be done in that spirit which should always characterize our study of the Word of God.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from What Saith the Scripture?: An Exposition and Analysis of the Pentateuch and Earlier Historical Books of the Old Testament; With Explanatory and Practical Notes The design of this book is to supply the Bible student with a guide and help to the consecutive study of the word of God as a whole. Referring the reader to the authors previous work, "Searching the Scriptures," for a more detailed account of suggestions for the daily reading as well as the study and meditation of the Bible, it will be sufficient now to mention some general matters connected with the present volume. This is intended to be, not so much lectures on the books of the Old Testament, or a commentary on the same, as an exposition and analysis of the books themselves, necessarily very brief and general, with the exception of the book of Genesis, which is more fully considered. Thus to read the following pages with profit, it is essential to have the open Bible for constant reference and verification. In this way the diligent student will be brought into close contact with the word of God itself; and the various portions thereof being mapped out with more or less detail, the attention will be concentrated on the sacred page especially, there will be Divine communion through the Word, the voice of the Spirit will be recognised and heeded, the heart will respond thereto, and the authors one great desire, of rendering assistance in searching the Scriptures, will be realized.
