This book explores Filipino, the national language of the Philippines, from the perspectives of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Positive Discourse Analysis (PDA)—informed by Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). It is designed to encourage researchers to study Filipino texts—both spoken and written—and to unpack them in a way that clarifies their function in Philippine society. With this goal in mind, the book introduces a number of discourse analysis tools and shows how to apply them to a range of Filipino texts—including a children's picture book story, some mental health advice about coping with COVID-19, President Duterte's speech about the Philippine government's initial response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a comment piece from a student newspaper about problems with online learning modules produced by the Department of Education, and a reflective text about growing up in Davao. This is the first book to draw on a range of functional linguistic tools to analyse Filipino discourse in order to provide deeper insights into the role of language in bilingual education, the linguistic enactment of power, and the importance of thinking across languages when analysing texts. Key issues addressed include the complementarity of CDA and PDA, SFL's model of social context (as register and genre), analysing bilingual texts and bilingual education. The book fosters appliable linguistics as a dialectic of theory, description, and practice—supporting Filipino discourse analysts as they engage with the challenge of giving people access to a range of tools they can use productively to mean and thereby more successfully pursue their social goals. As such, it provides a model for researchers of other languages of how to encourage the analysis of meaning in texts within and beyond the clause. It is relevant to scholars across the spectrum of linguistics, particularly those working in Systemic Functional Linguistics.

Against this backdrop, the authors examine an array of practices and channels through which various social groups have sought to dismantle oppressive structures, find hope amid despair, and reshape understandings of mortality, including what it means to be in community. COVID-19 has issued a challenge to our conscience and to our symbolic capacities, and this book is an earnest response to that challenge, one that is attuned to our collective vulnerabilities.

Language choice has become a common phenomenon in interracial encounters in which speakers are always faced with the challenge of choosing an appropriate language in various domains of communication. In multilingual and multiracial societies, language choice can sometimes be crucial because of its social, political, and economic impact on the speakers. Even in the smallest unit of a society which is the family, language choice plays an important role particularly in interactions between husbands and wives who come from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. It is therefore the objective of this research to examine the language choice in interracial couples' communication. More specifically, this research examines the language choice, accommodation strategies, and code switching patterns in verbal communication of Filipino-Malaysian couples in the home domain. Furthermore, this study explores the occurrence of language choice in relation to ethnicity, first language, and gender. To carry out the study, 60 spouses consisting of Filipino-Malay, Filipino-Malaysian Chinese and Filipino-Malaysian Indian couples were interviewed and given questionnaires which include the socio demographic profile, language choice and accommodation strategies used. Data were collected using the qualitative approach by interviewing and recording the conversations of Filipino-Malaysian couples. To support the qualitative findings, a quantitative approach based on the questionnaire results was also used. The findings of the study reveal that Filipino-Malaysian couples prefer English as their medium of communication at home with some switching to Bahasa Malaysia, Chinese and Filipino languages. The couples' preference of English is prevalent although none of them considered English as their first language. Their mother tongue becomes the secondary preference which is evident in the use of code switching. The findings further reveal that couples' language choice is influenced by ethnicity, first language and gender. On the other hand, the use of accommodation strategies such as approximation, interpretability, discourse management and interpersonal control accommodation strategies occurs in many interactions. The findings of the study support Giles' and Powesland's (1978) Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT) that in interracial couples' communication spouses tend to accommodate each other by using a range of accommodation strategies which include code switching.

During the First World War, ill-advised steps by colonial officials in the Philippines who were responsible for the colony's finances created a crisis which lasted from 1919 until 1922. The circumstances shook the foundations of the American colonial state and contributed to Manuel L. Quezon’s successful effort to replace Sergio Osmeña as leader of the politically dominant Nacionalista Party. These events have generally been blamed on a corruption scandal at the Philippine National Bank, which had been established in 1916 as a multi-purpose, semi-governmental agency whose purpose was to provide loans for the agricultural export industry, to do business as a commercial bank, to issue bank notes, and to serve as a depository for government funds. Based on detailed archival research, Yoshiko Nagano argues that the crisis in fact resulted from mismanagement of currency reserves and irregularities in foreign exchange operations by American officials, and that the notions of a "corruption scandal" arose from a colonial discourse that masked problems within the banking and currency systems and the U.S. colonial administration. Her analysis of this episode provides a fresh perspective on the political economy of the Philippines under American rule, and suggests a need for further scrutiny of historical accounts written on the basis of reports by colonial officials.

Historically organised at a local or national scale, the fields of medicine and healthcare are being radically transformed by new communication, transport and biotechnologies creating, in the process, a genuinely globalised sphere of biomedical production and consumption. This emerging market is characterised by the circulation of bodily materials (tissues, organs and bio-information), patients and expertise across what traditionally have been relatively secure ontological and geographical borders. Crossing both disciplinary and geographical boundaries, this volume draws together a number of important contributions from acknowledged leaders in three respective fields: the trade in bodily commodities, biomedical tourism and migration of health care professionals. It explores and maps out the key characteristics of this emerging, although as yet poorly researched global trade, questioning how, where and why bodies cross borders, whether this exacerbates existing health inequalities and how these circulations impact on healthcare services.
