This is the best account of social behavior from a functional behavioral point of view. Well reasoned yet daring in scope, this text is used around the world. Analyzing Social Behavior provides the first full coverage of the social sciences from the perspective of modern behavior theory. The book provides an up-to-date introduction to behavior analysis and an analysis of a broad range of human social behaviors, using research from psychology, anthropology, sociolinguistics, and sociology. The book demonstrates why most individualistic concepts of psychology- such as the self, thinking, and grammar-are inherently social events. While the special properties of verbal communities that maintain such behaviors are unique and delineate the social sciences, this book shows that these properties can be understood from a natural sciences perspective.

This book provides an innovative foundation for looking at human and social behavior u as a system of purposeful (teleological) events. It uses a systems theoretical approach for the study of these phenomena, and illustrates and extends general systems theory. Part One develops the concepts of traditional mechanism from which, successively, the concepts of "function," "choice," "goal-seeking," and "purposefulness" are derived, leading to a quantitative formulation of "personality". Part Two provides an analysis of aspects of purposeful behavior and personality, and Part Three explores the interaction of purposeful systems. Part Four is concerned with the study of social groups and ideal-seeking behavior. Finally, structural concepts underpinning the theoretical system are redefined in technological terms, thus demonstrating the non-vicious circularity and interdependence of all scientific concepts.

This timely book focuses on influence and behavior analysis in the broader context of social network applications and social media. Twitter accounts of telecommunications companies are analyzed. Rumor sources in finite graphs with boundary effects by message-passing algorithms are identified. The coherent, state-of-the-art collection of chapters was initially selected based on solid reviews from the IEEE/ACM International Conference on Advances in Social Networks, Analysis, and Mining (ASONAM '17). Chapters were then improved and extended substantially, and the final versions were rigorously reviewed and revised to meet the series standards. Original chapters coming from outside of the meeting round out the coverage. The result will appeal to researchers and students working in social network and social media analysis.
